I'll looked at both when i broke my nexus one - i went for the Desire HD and its awesome, so much faster and better then my nexus one was. But it was a tough choice, in the end i went with htc as i thought the brand sounded posher then samsung!!

Got the galaxy and the battery is not great is you use bluetooth and wifi.

same with the desire hd, i can get around 10 hours constant emails calls and texts before it dies

S2 and DesireS out soon (multicore).

Hold out or you'll have an outdated phone in a couple o months. If you're spending £400 or will have in on contract for the next 2 years an extra core might make all the difference.

I would say go for the HTC Desire HD because Samsung are a terrible company for making phone operators pay for FREE updates. I think some of the last galaxy phones are still on 2.1 because Samsung wanted to charge everyone for the OTA update, something about system updates and cosmetic updates.

The new HTC range of phones are out now/soon so you better have a look at them

Im in the same dilemma as to what phone, really doing some extensive research.

With the galaxy s there is a problem with the gps apparently - so thats off my list

Desire HD - screen to big! Biggest I would want is 4" (glennda behave :) )

Then started looking at the SE Neo - but SE do locked/encrypted bootloaders = no custom rom

so thats off my list

Moto Atrix same as SE - so no go

Leaves me with;

S Galaxy S2 - which will be overpriced and not to sure about how good the gps is, bootloader unkown?

LG Optimus 2X - rumours suggest unlocked bootloader - yay!

LG Optimus Black - Single Core, but has got the New Nova display screen upto Iphone standards

Desire S/Incredible S - Single Core, and improvements on the previous models

Thats it so far...

The next generation of pones look likely to land April/May according to Expansys (who are generally pretty good on release dates).

If you are going for a phone now, the Galaxy S is good (if a little plasticy) as long as you don't use the Samsung ROM - I use Darky's ROM (see darky.ficeto.com ) and it makes it into a new phone... fast, better battery, better GPS... just better!
