Technicians office security!!

Our office is kept locked when we're not in it and sometime when we are and need to get stuff done. IT Techs, Bursar and Site Manager are the only ones with keys and they're all trustworthy.

 

Server room is IT Techs only. Bursar has a key, but unless it's on fire, no-one is allowed in unescorted.

Many thanks for the staggering response to my first ever post for help from what is obviously an active, entertaining and well knowledgeable community that I am now even more proud to be a part of.

 

I thought I would post an update in response to your assistance which has been very helpful indeed!

 

We have approached our union links here in the school with our intent to use the code in a sealed envelope for emergency purposes only (thanks for the idea). For convenience, and due to the fact that we do trust the site supervisors (just that they were not diligent enough with the first code we set to keep it safe from "over the shoulder" onlookers) we will keep this in our pidgeon hole. Only the Site Super and the two of us will know it is there. If it is ever opened for any reason or goes missing, we will re-set it and notify the appropriate people that there has been a possible security breach.

 

I should also mention (this is for the poor tech with no handle or lock) that we did not ask anyone if we could fit the code lock on the door. There was a strong indication that the answer "No" would have been immediately forthcoming. As I am very handy and have re-built three houses in the past (including door knobs and locks), I brought my own tools in and fit the lock myself the day before the recent weeks holiday. From that moment on, we felt safe to leave the room. This is when the preverbial whatsit hit the spinning bladed thing! Anyway, we think we are now on the road to an acceptable solution thanks in part to you all....

 

I will keep reading this post and respond in as timely a fasion as possible to any questions or requests. Will let you know how we get on!!

Our room is code locked - however, as the alarm console for the building is in the room also, all staff who are liable to come in during the holidays, or may otherwise need the alarm code need to know our door code also. As a result, a majority of teaching staff know this

Hmmm, surely the fact that you told nobody and took the job on yourself was invariably going to lead to this situation?

 

If somebody started installing their own little wireless network in another department because they dabbled with networking, without first consulting you, I'm sure the proverbial whatsit would hit the fan for them too. It certainly would around here. SSO do lock installs I do server installs.

Perhaps a slight misunderstanding here: The code lock on the door was fine with senior management. Time was the issue as we needed it done straight away. The whatsit hitting the fan was over releasing the code and was a matter we wanted to come to a head anyway. The solution to the problem was found in part in some of the ideas here in this forum. I also have no problem with someone firing up a stand alone wireless network in a classroom (or in the carpark or a house across the street that I can log into from my office if it's unprotected). Not my problem! As long as I don't have to support it and it is not ported to any of our school networks. I would not attempt unauthorised entry into anyone elses area and I do not expect them to gain unauthorised entry into mine.

 

SSO's install locks - yes (but then they know the code) - when they have time.

 

I install locks better than our SSO's - straight away as I make time.

 

I install servers - yes. Locked up servers that no one can access but us.

 

They hired me here because I am extremely versatile, this I am proud of. No job for us takes long. It happens, and it happens quickly......

our main door has a code lock which 1 cleaner and site manager also know

our storeroom is locked with only 2 keys, both of which we have

 

in the server room we have installed a netbotz http://www.netbotz.com/

 

this is able to log via a camera and door switch any entry into the server room, also logs temp and humidity changes

bit expensive but we like our toys

Both our office and server room have the same lock...which is also the same as every other office on the floor so virtually everyone has access

 

Cleaners do seem to unlock the office door and do leave it open which annoys me but to be fair to them they seem to leave the server room well alone

 

We do all have keys but generally the office is left open all day unless we know we're all in another location. Server room stays locked although I am guilty sometimes of going in once and leaving it unlocked the rest of the day....

 

Staff are allowed in the room if we're in here (not a lot we could do to stop them) and we try and encourage kids to stay outside the door, and most do, but you get some (mostly sixth formers) who just barge straight in

Only me has a key for my office, but if I know I am going to be off I leave the key with the technician. This is not been done by the way as I don't want him in, we just never have had the chance to get a copy done, as you need school letter head etc to get this type of key cut.

 

Both myself and Technician have a key for the server room, the caretaker also has a master key for that area of the school which fits the server room.

 

We also have a key for all ICT Suites across the school as well as master keys for general classrooms which is kept hanging up in the server room.

Our ICT support office - all 4 of us have keys, as do SMT, premises and cleaners. Nothing has ever gone missing so not worried and we tend to be first in and last out anyway.

ok this will make you laugh - my 'server room' is a cupboard in the ict suite and the ict suite door is locked by.......

I did have a code bolt but that decided to lock me out one day so removed part of that and put a padlock on it instead! And all staff know the combination to the padlock as they quite often want to go into the suite to collect printouts after i've gone home but nothing ever seems to 'walk' without a message being left on my desk that they've taken it.

The entry door into my office has an individual key, specially for that door. IT staff have them, site manager and cleaners. The office has an Axis cam in it as well. Lockup cupboards are used for laptops etc.

 

The entrance into the IT Suites surrounding my office are code doors using "Keylex" locks. The server room has 3 keys..me, network manager, and site manager. There's a cam in there too, running into the network cab and off to the council IT offices.

 

We're getting an office "extension" soon so myself and the Net manager can have our own area...THEN, we'll kit the security out. Lockable cabinets, cameras, stable door, and if I can salvage one, an electric release/yale lock.
