john Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 Yes, Departments will be charged a fine for the wasted electricity from leaving their computers on! Me thinks the teaching unions will put end to that Rich
rh91uk Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 A local school to us does that one as daily basis and this one came from the head! They will get email warnings before, the second time a fine will be applied.
Butuz Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 Was going round the school with a print company doing a print audit and hey presto came into a welsh room to find a projector left on, but not illuminated with all three lights on it flashing red. None of the buttons worked and I had to pull the plug out to shut it off!!!! I think that one be fried good and proper!! Butuz
beeswax Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I enjoyed driving past a local primary school during the xmas break to see a projector in a road facing classroom still switched on, all through the holidays you'd see a faint blue square in the evenings projected on to the whiteboard. Pehaps someone here could do a guide (using current electric prices) as to what equipment left switched on costs a school. We could turn it into a poster Then people could use it to bill departments who are too lazy to check wether kit is switched off at weekends or during the hols. During the third week of the summer break a cleaner mentioned that a projector was switched on in a classroom. I did a simple calculation for the teacher involved, 6 weeks x 7 x 24 = 1008 hours, and the life of this particular bulb is around 2000 hours (I didn't add in the cost of the energy used) the first week back after the holidays in September. Second day back the head gets a call that we're going to have an Ofsted inspection the following week, and two days before the inspection this particular teacher's projector bulb starts to fail spectacularly. Fortunately we carry spares for these projectors. She still leaves her projector on all day.
Edu-IT Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Wonder if said person leaves lights on at home all day?
techman Posted February 26, 2011 Posted February 26, 2011 And what about wireless access points being left on? Are timers the only way to automatically shut these down every evening and at weekends?
localzuk Posted February 26, 2011 Author Posted February 26, 2011 And what about wireless access points being left on? Are timers the only way to automatically shut these down every evening and at weekends? Wireless access points use very little power - eg. Ruckus 7300 series use about 9W. At current prices, that's about £9 a year in electricity in the UK. However, if you do want to turn them off, and you were using PoE to power them, and also had managed switches, you could disable the PoE to those ports on the switch via a script at certain times.
