Cambridge Audio Amps!

Sounds as though one of the relays have blown on a couple of our Cambridge Audio Amps (they have no model numbers on them! )

 

Ive been trying to get them repaired, Ive rang around all the local electrical "mom and pop" shops but with negative gain!

 

Does anyone have any idea who I could possibly send them too!

Just a silly thought .. have you tried Cambridge Audio themselves?

from the CA site FAQ - "In the UK, parts can be obtained from our distributer Richer Sounds, whose service department can be contacted on 0161 474 6800".

Worth another try ..?

Not sure of what you expect a repair cost to be, but I would imagine upwards of £40. Maybe replacing the units with something new might be the more cost effective option with warranty etc.

Bit of a tangent, but are the Cambridge amps problematic? I'm thinking of getting a new one for home (Richer Sounds sell a Topaz model), but if they seem flaky I won't get that.

 

We probably have about 15 of them. I can only think of one failure in the last 4 years. The only big issue is they have a little button labelled 'Monitor M/D' which mutes them. This does cause some confusion.

Has the left channel stopped working by any chance? If so it could just be the left channel fuse. We've had all of our cambridge audio A1 amps go in this manner.

Their decent range are supposed to be quite good, but the cheap A1 is appaulling. Every one of our 15+ blow a fuse for the left channel (before packing in completely)

Got a couple of A1 and Topaz amps, not had a problem so far. Infinitely better than the Vision ones we had which are expiring one after the other with leaking capacitors and blown fuses. Also got a Teac, and Tangent amp which uses electronically stepped volume, no more crackling issues, but sound-wise they are all much of a muchness at this level.

 

That said, I've stopped buying these as they take up a lot of space, and started going for something smaller like the NuVo and Sahara amps which fit into single-gang back boxes you can mount onto a wall. Nuvos cost about the same and they include the speakers.

Some years back I managed to get a transformer for a CA amp that my bro' had bought. I'll see if I can find details of where it came from.

 

There is probably nothing in them that couldn't be found in the RS or CPC catalogue.

I was under the impression that you couldn't buy Cambridge Audio amps _except_ in Richer Sounds? Try head office? Give gyp?

We have had 4 or 5 of these exact amps go with a relay style buzzing noise as you describe. We have a local electrical engineer that repairs them at £25 a time. Got to worth a shot looking locally. Better than buying new.
