I'm looking for a cheaper alternative to Dreamweaver, what does everyone else use to teach web design in schools?

I've found a nice alternative to photoshop called GIMP but dreamweaver has me stumped.

I've not used it to teach but personally I like NetObjectsFusion Download NOF page

WYSIWYG editor that builds the HTML for you but you can edit it as HTML if you want to, or a mixture of the two.

In terms of teaching/learning it might be quite powerful to create something using drag&drop technique and then be able to look at the HTML that is used to actually achieve what you did and match the two together.

I've started trying to push Expression Web and Kompozer, although the uptake is slow. Kompozer obviously free, Expression Web available through Dreamspark (free through our EES Subscription)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but we are also after an alternative to the Adobe/Macromedia suite. We currently use Macromedia Studio 8 which causes us problems in a Windows 7 environment with the recommended patches applied. In an ideal world Adobe CC would be the way to go but the licencing costs just make it impossible to the even contemplate. A lot of people seem to rave about Kompozer and Bluefish and I have also look at BlueGriffon which seems good. I just wondered if people’s views have changed in the 4 years since the OP’s question?

We use notepad++ these days for most web teaching.

In my opinion using a WYSIWYG visual editor is not industry practice these days.

I don't think WYSIWYG editors were ever industry practice to be honest!

Brackets is a very good editor, includes intelligent auto complete for HTML, CSS and Javascript as well as live debugging in Chrome (i.e. code changes take effect immediately in Chrome)

I am looking at Kompozer as an alternative to Dreamweaver but our head of IT who does not know HTML has described it as inadequate for GCSE compared to Dreamweaver, obviously without stating any of these inadequacies.

Does Dreamweaver still put in loads of its own tosh when producing sites. TBH last time i used it was about 10 years ago.

I use SublimeText , Atom , or even brackets. but any text editor is all thats needed.

Have a look at NVU if your after a Dreamweaver alternative though.

Holy old thread batman...

We use Serif Web Plus here now. Couldn't afford to continue with the Adobe suite!

Depends what you mean by tosh. If you choose a plain html page, it puts the structure of a basic html document in (with html, head, title, body and the like pre-filled). But that's about it.

You can use templates etc... but you don't have to.

Indeed, when compared to Frontpage, Dreamweaver is a paragon of good behaviour and HTML. It's quite heavy compared to other HTML editors (as is the CC Suite in general) but as far as WYSIWYG editors go, it's quite good.
