Does anybody else find that the HP Procurve 1800-24g has large response times, (usually 5ms) I had faulted this to HP as I thought that it was an issue with the switch, but not the replacement does exactly the same.... even when not connected to the rest of the network.

 

is this the same for anybody else who has the 1800-24g?

Terrible switches in my opinion.

I normally love HP stuff - these were a complete pig to setup and get working on our network - plug in a POE box and the switch dies and then it comes back up, but you can't ping it or manage it - [ it's working as a switch ] so you have to re-set it - [ manual re-set ] and re-configure it again. Joke. [ I think I posted something on here about them once ]

I've got a HP ProCurve 1810G last year brand new and not had any problems, I always update to the latest firmware\software on the switches, have you done this?

 

I also run HP in the work place, love the stuff!

These devices are not a good choice..they are better suited for smaller environment (like at home). the 2510 or 2810 models are a better choice.....

I still have two (that I inherited) and they are my most problematic switches. I am replacing them very soon.

This ping rate and response is normal for this switch.

With a CPU probably less powerful than digital watch you shouldn't really expect anything more from a £100 switch!

 

I have used these without issue in several economically challenged installations but as soon as we started to try and do anything clever such as vlans and QOS we ran into real problems so had to change them to 25xx's

I suspect the 5ms response is something to do with its lack of memory - Packet buffer size: 500 KB; RAM/ROM capacity: 2 MB Flash; Capacity: 2 MB; SDRAM: 64 KB, that's just ridiculous...

 

Compare this to a HP 2510 - Processor : MIPS 32 @ 264 MHz, 8 MB flash, packet buffer size: 384 KB, 64 MB SDRAM, this is much more realistic.

 

I'd rather have a quality 10/100 switch with 1000 uplinks rather than a cheap gigabit switch.
