webman Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 I would be inclined to mix things up so cables don't have that far to go to the switches, and to minimise the amount of vertical cables that end up getting in the way. I've attached a photo of the top half of a 42U cab that I think has a similar amount of stuff to what you want.

One switch is 24port PoE, One is 24 port normal and one is 48 port normal. So, we have 3 switches to deal with. And I don't want short cables, as they don't follow the Cat5e spec (anything less than 0.5m IIRC).

Because the cables are unable to 'twist' inside the sleeve for a long enough distance in order to ensure they are working properly. CCNA covers this somewhere. Don't think its specified anywhere, but it is simple physics. IIRC the minimum recommended length is 0.5m.

MatthewL Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 We do 3 1U patch panels switch, same again and use 1/4m patch leads or 1/2's where needed, makes it a lot tidyer and gives you more space and no need for as many cable management racks. I would show you the pictures of what we have done but do not have them handy at the moment on my pc.

I know you'll be absolutely certain now that that will never be needed but if things change and there's no space to grow then it's way more expensive to change it later.

No room to grow - no room in the room where the cabinet is going for it to grow! And vertical cable management is interesting - I'll have to look at that. Not got the cabinet out the box yet, so don't know what sort of space there is.

Use shorter cables it makes life easier and if a switch needs swapping out we can do it in 5 minutes no faffing around untangling cables any more. Somone of our cabs become untidy due to the way some of our phone systems work i.e. cross patch to another panel so end up with loads of extra yellow cables that we would not have with a VOIP system!

You shouldn't have to untangle cables if the cable management is done properly - you just unplug the 48 cables from the switch and the management holds them tidy while the switch is swapped. Similarly, the phone patch leads shouldn't be going across things - only ever go horizontally and vertically. In our cabs the phone patch always goes at the bottom and the (green) cables will them go from the patch panels feeding the sockets across and down to the phone patch panel.

MatthewL Posted February 2, 2011 Posted February 2, 2011 Our phone ones go in management rails to the ports then down the side ones into another cab, its a mess and I hate long cables in all our cabs. With some of the cabs due to the mess up by certain members of the team who used to be in charge when ordering new cabs for a few new sites they did it all wrong and messed up so we have had to make do.
fawkers Posted February 3, 2011 Posted February 3, 2011 just my 2p worth, here we never have patch leads running accosss the cab, they all go from the patch panel (50/50 left and right) then down the sides of the cab and back inwards along cable management until there above the port in the switch that they should be. The cables down the side are all velcro-ed into place the keep things tidy.

I was a right mess with spaghetti all over the place.. I was able to swap some of each and reorganise it ... Before After

IanT Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 We dont have much cable management in the cabs are we have very short patch cables, got a company who makes them for us, looks alot better than longgggg cables stuck down the side etc.
