Carter Posted January 18, 2011 Posted January 18, 2011 (edited) Is there not a "General Discussion" section on this forum? Didn't see one so posted here. Anyways..... We had a girl walk into the Tech Office that needed help with her PC laptop, she had no idea about computers at all! To give an idea of how computer friend she was, we needed to install Firefox to try and figure her web issue. We told her we were installing another web browser. Her answer was, "There's another Internet? How do I connect to that one? (She only used the "E" icon ... IE Browser) Also she asked why she can't get on the wireless at home.... there's internet at home but everyone has it locked "what would the password be? I tried 1-10, all 1's, all 9's etc without luck. How do I get that fixed?" ... our answer .... you don't !!!! You pay for it !!!! The last comment I tried not to laugh! While still in the office waiting for Firefox to install she noticed a few different "Mac OS X" boxes on the shelf & she asked .... "The box with the big X on it, is that the user manual for Windows for girls?" WOW.... just wow!!! Edited January 20, 2011 by ZeroHour

Sirbendy Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 (edited) I had one from a chap in science...pulled a file down and burned to CD for him, for his missus. "Mate, you are my most favourite person in the school. Tonight, I'll be screaming out YOUR name"... I do love our staff and their sense of humour. That said, I just set up our sympodium and mics for a presentation for him, and as soon as he realised he had mics, PC control and AMX control of the theatre facilities, he set about winding up the video/theatre tech by turning the lights off, singing into the mic etc. Video tech turn the volume down. Staff member looks at me, looks at the control marked "sound", whacks it up to full and shouts "Mr *video tech*, IS THIS BETTER? CAN YOU HEAR ME? I THINK I DID SOMETHING WRONG THERE.."....it fair shook the theatre.. I was behind the curtain, quite frankly laughing my backside off...the man is and always has been an out and out windup merchant. It's people like that who remind me that actually, this place can be ruddy hilarious and somewhat risky. His staff are giving presentations in there (he's a HOD BTW), and I can imagine he'll be winding up the screen, altering volumes and so on just to wind them up. He's had a minor PC problem before and sent his entire class to our office for us to teach. In Jest, of course. I have to say we share a sense of humour. A lot of the staff here have a similar one - I can't abide miserable and serious. Edited January 19, 2011 by Sirbendy 1
Flakes Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Not computer tech related but had a brill one off the girlfriend. me: whats the meat from baby cows called again? her: *looks at me, and shouts "LAMB!"

Gary But I live much more than 20 miles from the BBC wireless transmitter and that works fine at home - why have you broken your school wireless :-) Of course, it's stupid but "ordinary" people don't understand the ways in which wireless for WiFi is different from any other wireless (if they even think about it at all!)

LosOjos Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Outside of work, but I was once asked to take a look at my mom's friend's PC, because it had stopped reading CD's. Got there and the thing was chock full of viruses, I'm amazed it worked at all, so I started to talk her through why it's important to a) have AV software and b) keep it up to date when she says: "I thought it might be a virus, so I put some antibiotics in it" Have a guess where she had put the antibiotics? 4

Disease Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 My mum once moaned to my dad that he never let her help him on the crossword, she kept pestering him one day to ask her one, so he did. Dad: Poisonous snake, 3 letters starting with A. Mum: Adder! True Story

Surely this can't be true? I'd like to call Shenanigans on this.
LosOjos Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Surely this can't be true? I'd like to call Shenanigans on this. I'd like to say it's not true. However, it was without a doubt the biggest face palm moment of my life
LosOjos Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 I'd like to say it's not true. However, it was without a doubt the biggest face palm moment of my life Although a close second was the time I came home to find my house mate had completely taken apart his laptop, I mean every single screw was out and the parts all over the table, and the reason? He was trying to find a virus...
mthomas08 Posted January 19, 2011 Posted January 19, 2011 Well I have had too many! But here is todays one. Your username is your surname and the password is Password thats a capital P on that. *staff member "Its still not working" Are you sure your doing Username and the word Password with a capital P on that. "Yes, Still not working" I have tried it and I put this username and this password thats the word Password with a capital P on that word Password. Are you sure thats what you are doing. Carter Posted January 19, 2011 Author Posted January 19, 2011 We give out passwords when users head into the office, we have had the following: - I can't find the "S" with the two lines through it ... "What do you mean?", it's not on the keyboard, I found the "$" sign but did not see one with two lines through it? - There is an issue with the keyboard in the common area. "What's wrong with it, doesn't it work at all"? ... well, the keyboard works but the keys are messed up. When I sat down at the computer the keys are out of order, it was changed to "QWERTY" instead of "ABCDE... etc"?
MK-2 Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 at my old place we first changed passwords just to 'p' (because our kids wouldn't remember much else). unfortunately that soon changed when we realised saying 'p' to a kid could mean they either type 'p' 'pea' 'pee', etc. so we changed it to 'pass' (password was out the question as most seriously couldn't spell it), but with my accent up here, even then had some type 'pars'
Jawloms Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 I had someone once who was running low on disk space on her laptop. Her solution? She'd got loads of disks at home with plenty of space on them that I could copy across for her on to her laptop!

sippo Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 A classic is always 'Can we have a black and white toner please'.
JJonas Posted January 20, 2011 Posted January 20, 2011 Have sent a few students to reprographics for white toner. The look on their faces when the come back with a ream of paper is classic.
