Hightower Posted January 17, 2011 Posted January 17, 2011 In 24 days I'll be sat down in the tattoo studio, and I'm starting to get anxious/nervous about the whole thing. I've had tattoo's before, and as many of you know I have even tattooed myself a couple of times, but never anything on this scale. I'm getting a half back tattoo (top to middle, full width) and it's an 8 hour session. I can't wait, but I'm also nervous about how it's going to feel in the 6th and 7th hour! I've had a tattoo on the top of my back, and it felt a lot easier than when I got my arm done, and I just hope the rest of my back feels the same. Also, the design has a lot of shading, and strangely I find outline needles easier to take (most people I speak to about this prefer shading needles). iPod, book, and plenty of hard sweets I think!

Well I can't show any pics as it's a bespoke piece and is still being designed by the artist. But of course I will post up pics after I've had the work done. As for giving the design away, I don't want to try and explain it and would rather wait to show pics when it is done. I was hoping someone could come along (maybe Domino haha) and tell me "don't worry, it'll not be as bad as you think" or "i wouldnt recommend that long a sitting". Has anybody gone that long under the needles? If you have a tattoo, what is the longest you have gone in one sitting?

My uncle has a massive one on his back, had an 8 hour session for the outline, then was due for 2 x 8 hour sessions to colour and shade, but in the day he could only afford the first colour/shading session as he was laid off. Shame, because it's a beautiful tattoo, but needs finishing.

If you've an artist who'll run you through what he's doing as he's doing it - then you can prepare yourself for when he's going to be over a sensitive place, where there's protruding bone or nerve bundles. Its very easy to become complacent and then get shocked when you hit something painful. Have you had anything like the spine done before? Its quite something....
Hightower Posted January 17, 2011 Author Posted January 17, 2011 I have the famous Foo Fighters double F on the top of my back, over my spine. It felt surprisingly easier to take there than it did on my arm. I've just been reading different people's posts elsewhere on the web, and most seem to hit a barrier at 3 to 4 hours. With me never having sat for longer than two I'm a bit nervous about being able to take that. Apparently adrenalin runs short after 4 and the pain starts to hit home.

Actually only took about 4 or 4 and a half hours under the needles (as half hour for sketching it onto my back, half hour for dinner, a half hour break too, and it didn't take as long as expected). The first four hours or so weren't to bad. My adrenaline was running high and I was coping quite well. He did the clouds at the bottom last though, and it finished me. I hit the wall big time, and was about to tell him to leave it when he told me he was finished.

Shoulders were the easiest part of the session, where the clouds are was hairy too.
