Guest Guest Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 even where people have those things in place. access to emails, im, video conferencing ....often they choose not to use them to replace a lot of the unproductive travelling to and fro. maybe something to do with them wanting the face-to-face interaction with colleagues and/or customers as a means of breaking up the monotony of a daily existence in front of a computer screen. Or simply that they have a more traditional [outdated?] attitude to work ethic, which tells them it isn't work if they don't get up at the crack of dawn...spend an hour in traffic, a 40-mile round trip for a three hour meeting, whereas the alternative ways of communicating without an office or base doesn't feel like work to them. Or it could just simply be that they like claiming the mileage. i think it's a bit of all three. Or it could be the employers more traditional [outdated?] attitude to work. I know I've had funny looks when I've suggested I work from home when doing something which doesn't require being in the building, infact the majority of my work doesn't require me to be here but I know what the answer would be if I asked to work from home 3days a week even though I would most likely be more productive. There still seems to be this attitude that "you work your hours" rather than "is the work we pay you to do done? Yes. Well thats all that matters".

Well thats all that matters". We work in IT support, so being in school and supporting the IT is kind of important I think... Not to mention, the work is never done, as we all know, so using the argument you give, we'd never be allowed to stop working.

Making websites, rebuilding the network/servers and the likes isn't supporting. My job is to impliment new things, most of this doesn't require me to be on site.

Theres a bus stop right outside my window, and another right outside my work. Theres a bus lane all the way too which means a 10 min less journey time. However a week bus ticket costs me much more than fuel/running costs of my car, so its cuonterintuituve for me to get the bus. Plus I treated myself to a nice BMW for xmas so I dont really mind driving any more \

I don't work in a poxy little school which only employs 1 person in IT though.

Duane_Dibbley Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Living in manchester, I haven't yet "needed" a car - don't get me wrong I have wanted one for a long time. I currently cycle to work which is probably quicker than driving in rush hour traffic, but extremely stressful - I have actually been crashed into whilst stationary waiting to turn right onto a side road. I've got a new job starting in 2 weeks however, and will need a car to get there as its about 40mins away (by car). Hopefully getting one today!!! So, while the OP is thinking about how he can do without, I am now thinking about all the wonderful things I will finally be able to do - like getting more than 1-2 days worth of supermarket shopping at once!

Only learnt recently now making up for it been on sooo many road trips cars in nz and insurance way cheaper than UK I can pretty much drive what I like and afford it currenly got a Nissan cefiro 2.5ltr v6. I have a work collegeue who is 16 and drives a subaru wrx special edition cost him 20 pound a week to insure!!!!!

Flakes Posted January 13, 2011 Posted January 13, 2011 Lived a car free life up to 23, and i hated it, at my old job 1 hour ride on 2 buses for a trip that takes 20minutes in the car. At my new work place i can get the metro in and out which i had to do when the car broke, took 40minutes on the metro and cost £4.80 for a return ticket! costs me very little a day in petrol to go down the coast road and into whitley which only takes 15minutes or so to get to work in the car.

That will be the day when I have a car free life, that way I can just get beamed anywhere... although according to sheldon ( Big bang theory ) that would entail destroying myself first and then re creating myself some where else.
