Just had an ageing Planet FGSW-2402RS 24-Port 10/100 Mbps + 2 Gigabit slot fail and need a suitable replacement. Only one of the optical slots was in use. Been pleased with HP in the past, but not overly fussed on brand. Cheers!

cpjitservices Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Nortel do a pretty good range of switches - in our main cab we have a switch stack with a 12 month + uptime and it was cheaper than Cisco Switches. Also ProCurves are good switches. Good luck in your hunt, I just bought a Nortel switch from eBay for a student lab. It's a 450-24T, that switch has GBIC modules.

Utterly bomb proof. I would try and standardise your switches. If you start using any of the managed features it's much easier to be using one brand. Also with the exception of the 1800 series procurve switches can be managed with ProCurver manager. Just one word of warning, HP have bought out 3Com an assimilated their switches into the HP range. However I think they still run 3 Com software, for the sake of standardisation I'd avoid them for now.

I'm aware the immediate thought that springs to mind with Juniper is cost, however they (Juniper) are making a significant effort in the education and ahem . . . budget market. Go easy on me . . . its my first post!

Not all of them, they now also have a V range (value) which are cheaper but only have a 3 year warrenty and I think that they are just rebranded 3com value stock so I would aim more for the 2500, 2600 series which still have the full warrenty.

Mark from CPLTD sorted us out with an HP Procurve, and was very helpful with my constant queries/ignorance of exactly what sort of GBit connection was needed. All up and running now - so another thumbs up for CPLTD.
