The Register Not at all, but the true fact is that nearly anything you do on the internet can be traced, despite conspiracy theroists and hackers claims of protecting themselves. Unless we are going to live in a closed off world, we might as well get used to it, and just be careful what we do on where and with what. Otherwise stop using every forum, social network, mobile phone, shopping site (or shop for that matter), credit card, store card, Sky TV... the list goes on. All of this information is collected and use against you (shopping habits, tv habits etc).

Data privacy is a massive issue and my views are my own but without going headlong into said issue one point that always gets my back up is: 'I don't want the government knowing anything about me'... why? Unless you are doing something wrong, they are not going to be interested. You by law have to fill in the census every 10 years which has masses of data about you in it.

There is nothing wrong with them knowing about what you do in your daily life. It's what they do with it, thats what we should be concerned about. They use all data collected on use to manipulate and guide us to a ideal world beneficial only to them selves. Being aware of these thing only helps us stay firmly grounded and to not end up as a modern day slave where there is no middle class, but only the rich and very poor. Starting to sound a little like a high street preacher. Let be honest, we're living in a "Big Brother" country at the moment. Security Cameras are on the up. Records are being kept on everyone. It started off to be for our own safety, a lot of it still is. But, like everything in the world, it's being mis-used. Seen the film for V for Vendetta? I firmly believe the UK could end up being like that one day. And I firmly believe it's going to take something HUGE to stop that. But until there is not a huge amount you can do except be careful of what click, do, say, etc and carry on enjoying life. You never know there might be something in the Sun saying the Government are paying people to sit in starbucks to listen to your conversations in tomorrows release... what then?

It helped me get intouch with some old friends and people I use to know, but i'm not keen on the idea of telling people every little thing i do evey minute of the day. It's pointless!

The big problem is that you are assuming far too much competence on their part. I'm not concerned that the government might try and manipulate me in some way by using the data they doubtless have, I'm concerned that they might decide I'm somehow an anomaly and therefore a risk, and so haul me in for months without trial purely on the basis of data they have gathered. Very slim chance of it at the moment, but I wouldn't guarantee it'll stay that way. As to the various conspiracy theories you're spouting - again, you're crediting them with too much and too little competence. If they were capable of enacting such massive conspiracies as they're accused of then they'd certainly be more than capable of making them undetectable. If the leaks that people claim were real, and the evidence were even remotely plausible, then there would be many, many more leaks and we'd have failed conspiracies popping up non-stop. If there are any conspiracies going on I will assure you that we do not know anything about them. That's kind of the point.
