Rozzer Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Hey Folks, Just wanted to see what peoples thoughts were on mac os x Vs vista. From what i have seen from vista looks like a lot of ideas were taken from i life. What are everyone else's opinion? Regards, Ross
StewartKnight Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I beat my head against a wall when I see topics like this. Whatever gets the job done!!!!
openhgs Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Have you seen the "I'm a PC and I'm a MAC" ads? Sums the situation up perfectly. http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/
mrforgetful Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Have you seen the "I'm a PC and I'm a MAC" ads? Sums the situation up perfectly. http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ Well no, it sums up Mac vs Windows, not Mac vs PC as they claim. What about Linux?
mattx Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 What about OS/2 ? In a nutshell - who bloody cares [ as stewart says ] - it does the job. Personally - I hate anything Apple related. Nothing more than a fashion icon.
thom Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Or view the British version @ http://www.apple.com/uk/getamac/ads with the guys from "peep show". I almost fell off my chair with the propaganda Apple was spewing out - since when does any OS contain pie charts?!? Don't get confused between the OS and the software that runs on the OS (of which Windows has by far the greater amount of supported software) I have always found a PC a lot more flexible in getting what we need done as well as being more cost effective in terms of repairs, upgrades and support. Also you may want to survey what kids/staff use when not at school, you are trying to make ICT an aid to teaching and learning, not adding to the workload. and finally Apple stole lots of ideas off Microsoft and implemented them quicker (and better) but that is big businesses for you. Whatever you do, don't search for Apple versus Microsoft or you will get swallowed into a world of bickering fanboys/girls.
localzuk Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Have you seen the "I'm a PC and I'm a MAC" ads? Sums the situation up perfectly. http://www.apple.com/getamac/ads/ We have some of these on bus stops in Minehead!?! I didn't see what they were trying to say in these ones as the PC was a guy in a suit and looked like a respectable businessman and the Mac was a guy in scruffy clothes looking a bit dodgy... Also, what about BeOS? (Well ZetaOS now). I like that OS, if only it were developed more!
localzuk Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 and finally Apple stole lots of ideas off Microsoft and implemented them quicker (and better) but that is big businesses for you. I think you need to provide some elaboration for that one.
petectid Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 and finally Apple stole lots of ideas off Microsoft and implemented them quicker Where do you get your information from? Look at any new features in Vista and I will name a technology some of them years old that were there first, for instance Aero looks alot like Suns Looking Glass. There is not really anything new in Vista. At least when Apple changed its Os strategy it built a new kernel based on BSD API and Mach API, and did not stick with the same rubbish we have suffered for years. Okay they have made enhancements but for all we know they could just be more patches to the ever growing sea of windows source code.
openhgs Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Also you may want to survey what kids/staff use when not at school, you are trying to make ICT an aid to teaching and learning, not adding to the workload. We have MACs, Linux and XP in the school; the order I've listed them in is the reverse of the hours spent supporting them, which XP taking a disproportionate amount of time, especially stall laptops. I personally find Linux the easiest to support - familiarity helps. The MAC Books never, ever go wrong - the staff love them! and finally Apple stole lots of ideas off Microsoft and implemented them quicker (and better) but that is big businesses for you. Both Microsoft and Apple stole their ideas from Xerox/PARC. Gates looked at the work of PARC (the Xerox Alto) and rightly decided that his DOS offering was extremely primitive in comparison, and the rest as they say is history.
gwendes Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I can't trust a company that genuinely think that PC is a brand. Even less a computer company - Apple really grates on me... compare yourself to a VAIO or Alienware if you dare - generic beige boxes can't fight back
mrforgetful Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 The thing is, yes Macs are stable and reliable, but, if Microsoft said 'You must use this graphics card, this motherboard, this chipset, this southbridge, this audio, this monitor etc etc' then Windows would be solid too. The price you pay for freedom and choice.
thom Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Yikes - what was that I said about fan boys? @petectid: i never said microsoft didn't copy anything, in fact i was trying to state the opposite, any way in terms of "evidence" (to which no-one can really prove anything) read through http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/macosx_leopard_preview.asp We use about 8 macs throught the school because they were donated to us and they are free to be used by anyone who feels the urge.
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Linux. OS X, yeah, great - it's based on BSD. But Apple - no better as a company than Microsoft are. Vista is just ridiculous.
gwendes Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Yikes - what was that I said about fan boys? Apple are just good at making people angry... it's the lies I can't stand
localzuk Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Lies? What lies? Are you telling me that my mac can't fly and make me toast?! Those dastardly sales people!
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Lies? The lie "Apple. It Just Works." springs to mind
localzuk Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Lies? The lie "Apple. It Just Works." springs to mind Well, it does. You take it out of the box and turn it on and it just works. Introducing third party software and things like AD integration - now that doesn't 'just work' but it doesn't really sour the claim
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 Well, I and some others tend to disagree User intervention is required and not everything is as rosey as fanboys make out; the only reason I can see for this is so they can re-assure themselves that it does work after they've paid a fortune for a fashion accessory.
gwendes Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 As with most things, unfortunately, sensible, logical, intelligent people are in the minority... I do agree that they are shiny and would happily buy Mac hardware (it's all te same generic x86 crap) - install XP and freak out any fanboys that come near my useful computer. Have Apple seen Peep Show? I understand that being an unemployed, drug-taking, failed musician is 'cool' - but surely these people have no money? I'd rather be David Mitchell any day
CyberNerd Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 The thing is, yes Macs are stable and reliable, but, if Microsoft said 'You must use this graphics card, this motherboard, this chipset, this southbridge, this audio, this monitor etc etc' then Windows would be solid too. absolutely. The price you pay for freedom and choice. Now that is just ridiculous, MS are about lock-in and lack of choice as much as Apple, except MS have been convicted for it.
webman Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 if Microsoft said 'You must use this graphics card, this motherboard, this chipset, this southbridge, this audio, this monitor etc etc' then Windows would be solid too. I disagree; BSD and Linux manage just fine on the majority of hardware available today.
GrumbleDook Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I like Apple kit ... I like Apple OSes (System 6 ... bring back System 6). I find they work very well and very easily for me. I also like XP, W2K Pro ... even NT4 wasn't too bad. I found DOS 6.22 quite ok. Solaris 2.6 is how I got into Unix ... and SuSE 6/7, then Red Hat of various flavours. I even like Vista and will probably find enough ways of making it do what I want. For me, the look and feel of Apple Kit and Apple OSes win out every time ... I find it just works with less problems other than things like websites that only want to work with IE, or software that is not cross platform ... and for that I now either use Parellels or Boot Camp. I know there are those that think they are a waste of money and yet another company that ties you in to hardware or proprietary software ... but for me they work ... and I do find that for a good number of students it is the same. But most people here know my preference ... I use what is appropriate but will tend towards a Mac running MacOS ... but failing that it would be a Mac running XP.
mattx Posted January 31, 2007 Posted January 31, 2007 I don't want any Caks, sorry Macs near my network. Funny thing is I get asked questions about them every other day from the kids / staff etc - most of the questions are based on: " You know XYZ software that runs on Windows ? " " Yes " I reply " Do you know anything like it which will run on my Cak ? " Or " Know any good games which will run on my Cak ? "
