How stupid am I ? Please start to call me any term which relates to thickness because I am......

 

I was testing a script on a server which monitors itself for network connectivity - for some reason which I can't work out it thinks it's the master browser for the network and then one of the DCs kills it - all that's needed is a nic disable and re-enable and it's back fine again. The problem is on-going and is being investigated by myself but as a quick work around to the problem I have knocked up a script which will disable and then re-enable the nic so it's back up quite quickly - the problem only occurs once a fortnight but this will save me a visit to the comms room.

So why am I stupid ? Well I was testing the script and typed in:

 

netsh interface set interface "local area connection" disable

You know that one where you remote into the server and shut it down instead of doing restart... and the school's locked up... and you haven't got a key... that was me a couple of months ago.

Yeah I've shut a server down remotely before when I was meant to restart it.

I've been there and done that before. Never on a server but I've tried to ipconfig /release on a client whilst RD'd to it.

Or you script to chmod permissions on a nix based file server to stop students removing games you want to take them NGO task about ... And fail to make sure that the string is in quotes... And the students have folders name " " so you get part of the string saying files/blah/student name/games/ / / ... And you wonder why sime file permissions at / are a bit strange stopping people getting access to *anything* .... Yeah, done the face palm thing.

done them all at one point, mine are usually coding typos and such but we all have 'blonde' moments

We use UltraVNC here for remote support, and it has a little button at the top to 'disable the NIC' a couple of buttons along from the 'blank input/output on remote machine' button.

 

Clicked that a few times, and then had to get up off my backside to restart the machine!

Last week when reinstalling my work pc. Backed up My Documents, photos, music, vids, email and reinstalled. Went to put the desktop back.....oh.

Thankfully I had a regular backup from the previous week and only lost a couple of recently worked on documents.

Whilst adding a windows service component from the add remove console I inadvertently ticked the uninstall DNS service which did what it says and uninstalled DNS on the DC, only found out when end users couldn't access certain services on the network.

 

I quickly remedied this with the re-installation of the DNS service on the DC..........................hehe!!

Yup, been there, done it and had the b*******g to prove it. Doing a Sims.Net upgrade remotely and shut the server down instead of restarting it. I had to make sure I was the first one in the following morning....

i suspect weve all shut down rather than restarted a machine before and its a swine when the pc in question is 40 miles away lol its bad enough when i once rebooted a server at dinner time and hit shutdown instead and then found the server room door locked and couldnt find a key

Others I have done are:

 

Hit Ctrl Alt Del on OS/2 LAN Servers [ anyone who has worked on OS/2 will understand ]

When laying a long RJ45 cable under some flooring I pulled out with my foot an entire fibre channel thus causing a complete loss of comms for an entire building [ around 500 users ]

 

As for coding errors - oh soooo many !!

Best one was when I fixed [ well thought I had ] a broken icon on a quick launcher of some type. Ended up with the script looping looking for the icon that was not there....[ well it was, but a single typo meant it wasn't ] - the script was set to auto start when users logged on thus causing about a trillion instances of this script opening up all over the site. After that I added the extra 'If' statement that should have been there to start with to stop such comedy.....

I get all servers with HP ILO or Dell DRAC in now so I can turn them on again

 

Also useful to have bios level access remotely though for vmware upgrades and OS installs etc.

...Tidied up my active directory structure and ended up removing the OU with the policy that directed the staff laptops to the correct printers....they were all defaulting to one across the school..

Teacher didnt notice and so were wondering where their printouts went

Was playing with a wireless access point once and managed to flood the network. Didnt think it was the access point as the symptoms appeared 10 mins after the access point was plugged in and had a couple of students who thought it fun to cause loopbacks that year (all before the switches had loopback detection enabled)..... so off we went to look for the loopback......... two hours later pulled out the access point and the issue went away

except it was on a firewall. that held all the site to site vpns...

 

in Hong Kong.....Whoops!

 

Luckily there's a very understanding MD there who got in early and turned it back on :-p

My network manager did a plankish thing. (if plankish is a word:)

 

he was upping the ram on a vmware virtual server (which happened to be our SQL server).

 

instead of pressing the green 'play' button for power on he pressed revert to snapshot.

 

This took the server back to dec 2007!!!!!....

 

........so i had to bring up a new SQL server and restore sql backups!!

I once sent my technicians on a hunt around the school to find out why users were having problems logging into the wireless network. I was busy updating a server with updates etc. It was a Sophos and PCE server so should not have interupted anything, well until I remembered that Radius was installed on it!

The ipconfig /release is the worst. I have done the shutdown one a time or two but unless you shutdown the firewall/VPN box it can be recovered from by popping off a WOL packet or two even without an iLO.
