witch Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 (edited) I have had one heck of a horrible day, starting at 07.20 when my car wouldnt start. To cut a long story short, it took me another 2.5 hours before I got to work, only to find that since I updated NOD yesterday, noone can get on the network properly - they can see the shared drives, but some programs won't work and, for example, I can't remote in to the server. I had half an hour to fix it, and couldn't so I had to leave it which I HATE doing. (any ideas?) Then I had some weird issues with a computer in my other job which I also havent fixed. Finally I was given a laptop that was in a bit of a mess - I tried various fixes but couldn't get anywhere so I decided to reimage it. By then I was in a hurry as I had to rush off and take my elderly mother to the doc before collecting my car, filling it up and driving about 45 miles, and all in a very short time. My mind probably wasn't on the job... To cut a long story short, I didnt check as to whether the laptop's owner had put any files on the c drive, rather than 'my docs' where they are synched up to the server. He had. He lost them. To make it worse, my boss the IT coord said that 'we' had advised people to save to the c drive if we didnt want things synced up - to save time, I think. I SWEAR I never said this, but it makes my mistake even worse. I have had such a bad day, and tomorrow I have to face the owner Anyone know how to rescue files after the machine has been reimaged? *it was the glow plugs and cost me £160 I haven't got Edited October 21, 2010 by witch
kmount Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Get the disk out of the laptop and slave it up. Run the same recovery tools you'd normally run and be optimistic. Everyone has off days hun, we all learn from them too. Chin up it'll be alright.
SYNACK Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Does sound like a less than perfect day. The NOD stuff is probably the network protection filth gone mad, you should be able to test by disabling it on a client and possibly the server then retrying logon. If it goes you may need to tweak the network protection rules to allow certain protocols through. I'm sure if it was conveyed to the teacher that they could save stuff on the c: that they did not want synced that it was also conveyed that this was not backed up and so their responcibility. If not then they probably can't prove otherwise anyway. A file recovery program may have some luck if the drive was only quick formated but it is unlikely to be able to save all of them unless the reimage was lucky enough to miss all of the sectors containing them. Better luck for tomorrow.
witch Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Got nothing to slave it to unfortunately.... Currently I have just about had enough
aerospacemango Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Crikey, witch......That's an appalling day. Don't lose heart, but take a deep breath and think about what you'd do, if your head wasn't frazzled by the events of today. Those will generally be the right things to do, so tomorrow you can go in, refreshed, and do them! Everyone has an off day, as kmount rightly says, but put it behind you, and tell the owner that you will do everything in your power to get his files back. Oh...and kick the cars' bumpers!!!...but then give it a kiss, so it dont let you down again!!
TwoZeroAlpha Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 have a *hug* witch. So hows about. Boot the said laptop with Ubuntu USB/CD. Have another UB stick handy with CG Security's "Testdisk" (TestDisk - CGSecurity). Plug in, run from usb (you will find all the info in the wiki, and use a USB hard drive to save the resulting files to. Hope tomorrow goes ok, I'd blame the staff member personally, saving docs in C: - that's a no no.
TechSupp Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 have another *hug* witch, Thought I'd had some crappy days! At least its Friday tomorrow,
Gatt Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 I really do know how you feel witch... hope it all works out for you
laserblazer Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 My wife was once a Tax Inspector and a self employed builder friend of mine invited us for a drink. He then told my wife his tale of woe and ask her advice. "Emigrate" she said. "No seriously, what should I do?" "I am being serious" she said. "Get the hell out of Britain". He sadly died recently but he had established a really successful bar in Vale da Lapa, a posh part of the Algarve and had no end of celebrity friends, including Sir Cliff! So witch, don't despair, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Just ask the laptop owner where their backup is. When they say they haven't got a backup, shake your head and breath in through your teeth.
Gatt Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 So witch, don't despair, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Haven't your heard.. the light at the end of the tunnel has been switched off due to budget cuts...
maniac Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 If the image put onto the laptop is the same as the origenal image, there's actually quite a good chance of getting documents back using something like this PC Inspector File Recovery - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com as there's every chance the image will have over written the same portion of the disk it was origenally on, so hopefully the portions of the disk with the files on may still be intact. It will take a while to do a byte by byte analysis of the disc, but it's your best chance of getting anything back. AS for the rest of your day have a hug Mike.

(too late was the cry)
clareq Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 As maniac says, there are free file recovery utilities out there, and his suggestion is a good one - saved more than one piece of A level coursework that had been trusted to a pen drive only! Tonight, forget all about it and have a glass of wine (or two), go to it fresh tomorrow.

Sounds good - I'll give it a go Is now a good time to admit that I actually started to image it with the wrong image? I stopped it when it had almost finished but that could have screwed it up royally, couldnt it? It was the image for another Dell though so maybe...? As for the NOD issue -thinking about it, what I actually did was push all the machines to do a normal update as we have some issues with some pointing at the server and some directly at the proxy and we wanted to know which were which without going around all of them. The only actual update that changed the software was the server software itself and the console. I was on the phone to NOD at the time and they didnt say anything - TBF they normally do as they are a great bunch.
elsiegee40 Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Oh witch This beats any of my my recent cr@ppy days. Good luck
witch Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 (edited) Couldnt you all come and help me tomorrow??? Edited October 21, 2010 by witch
elsiegee40 Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 we're on half term, but I've got a lengthy meeting trying to prise money out of our Bursar for 1) replacement for printer that's broken 2) replacement for printer that will be broken as soon as I push it our of the nearest window 3) laptop for marketing purposes 4) replacement projector 5) extra memory for Pcs that are seriously struggling 6) broadband upgrade 7) new version of AV software as old version don't like Win7 It's likely to be long, painful and largely unsuccessful I think
witch Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Couldn't you request a 'consultant' you know from Dorset to come and help you?
elsiegee40 Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 With pleasure! Can you get to Tonbridge for 9am?
witch Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Can you email my boss? (I can get anywhere by any time as long as it is AS FAR AWAY FROM HERE AS POSSIBLE!!)
mattx Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 I've had a terrible evening myself - I've run out of wine.
3s-gtech Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 £160 for glowplugs is pretty fair, what car do you have? It's usually fairly straightforward, but can be a swine.
witch Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 Fiat Ulysse 1.9 Well - a new day, a new start.....got in, ran a few recovery tools - no go - so I thought well never mind, did my best. Laptop owner seemed fairly OK. So - logged on to the domain and waited for the machine to pick up all the software...but it didnt. then it fell off the domain. Deep breath. Reimaged it -wouldnt connect to domain: invalid domain specified. Put it on by hand - seems OK, but still wont pick up software (we have another of this particular machine which I imaged a while ago and that was fine) Is currently running the startup scripts and has done so for the last 20 mins. HD is flashing so it is trying to do something. I know it looks dodgy, but before I did this it was fine, and was on the domain absolutely OK. So somehow it is my fault Any help would be great. Do I risk turning it off? It just installed a few fonts which means that one or two of the scripts have actually run - but now it is just sitting there
Hightower Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 £160 for glowplugs is pretty fair, what car do you have? It's usually fairly straightforward, but can be a swine. I'm sure that's the least of the OP's worries @Witch - Hope today goes okay for you. As Kim said, we all have days like these. It's just a case of keeping your head down and trying to get through it as best as possible. There's no worse feeling than knowing you should have done something and didn't (i.e. checking the C: drive), and realising the time you don't do it is the time you get stung. We're only human, and we all have our troubles to worry about. The time when this doesn't affect how we function is the time when we're lying six feet under. Good luck
3s-gtech Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Sounds a bit like the HDD is failing - also gives an excuse for the loss of data if it's on the way out! Do you any other 2.5" drives about to try?
