Afternoon all,

I'm looking at getting some new hosting for our school website and at the same time moving to an off site hosted email solution.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Cheers

CS New Media for sure.

The Google Apps thing is interesting, a key point with them is check regarding where it will store you data as you cannot export data protected by the DPA outside of the EU and Google won't tell you where it will be stored specifically so if you used Google for your school email system you need to get them to store it within the EU or your breaching it.

Microsoft will guarantee to store your data within the EU and thus are good to go, but well worth checking with your LA legal bods etc :)

Not quite right. Google are signed up the US 'Safe Harbor' agreement, meaning that data stored within their systems is protected to the same level as EU law, and has been accepted by the EU as acceptable.

Thats Interesting as I have been in discussions about these things with our LA (who have done the work) and it was a point blank no to Google as they are not answering enough questions and not approved for these uses as they are not meeting the requirements of the UK DPA. Maybe its something specific in the UK one, needless to say the MS systems are more likely to win over Google for our area.

It could be the Exporting Data line in the DP statements that schools send out probably needs removing that is probably it as it states data will not be exported or processed outside of the EU which is common on most UK things so it could be that

I'll add Netpivotal to the possible Hosters and Email (Unlimited) service providers. I prefer to use Linux see specs here but they also support MS.

Nice news here is they come with a ruck of applications (Worpdress for example) that install automagically. Ok, their WP version is very old, nevertheless the upgrade is painless. Their support is good and they offer the Plesk Control Panel (Parallels).
