  1. Single internal range, secondary school. Not happy about oneconnect’s announcement that schools with internal ranges “will limit the functionality and flexibility of the filtering service” I can’t remember hearing that at the webinar or seeing it in any of their previous documentation. Have I missed something?
  2. ICT Technician - Information for Applicants.docx ICT Support Technician - job description and person specification.doc ICT advert - november 2013.docx Hutton Church of England Grammar School 11-18 Voluntary Aided Comprehensive (11-16 boys only, 16-18 mixed) 882 students currently on roll (679 in the Main School and 203 in the Sixth Form) ICT Support Technician Required from January 2014 We are looking to appoint a hard-working and reliable ICT Technician to assist with maintaining the school's computer equipment and network. The post holder will be part of a small team responsible for dealing with faults, upgrades and routine maintenance. The job also involves moving and setting up heavy equipment, installing equipment and associated cabling and commissioning new equipment. No job is too small or too large! It is important that the candidate has an open mind and the ability to understand and implement new technologies. Ideally the applicant should be able to demonstrate competency in a wide range of skills such as computing, wiring, DIY and Audio/Visual. The ability to manage your own workload whilst being able to respond to emergencies is essential. The job involves using computers on a daily basis so a familiarity with Microsoft software is an absolute must. This is a permanent variable hours contract with a minimum of 15 hours a week. To begin with the post-holder will work 30 hours a week during term time only. The salary stated will be reduced to reflect the part-time, part-year nature of the role. The school is committed to the safeguarding and well-being of all young people and expects all employees to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be subject to Enhanced DBS clearance. For further details or to apply, please contact Miss P Rice (Head Teacher’s PA) on 01772 613112 or e-mail [email protected] The closing date for applications is Monday 25th November at 12:00noon. Interviews will be held on Friday 29th November. I’m the network manager at hutton so if anyone is interested I can field any questions you may have. Brian.
  3. We have a redirected menu that everyone gets (actually two menus – one staff one pupil) which covers all the standard installs that are deployed whole school. In addition to that, any software that is particular to one machine has its shortcut placed in a folder locally on the pc. A logon script copies any shortcuts in the folder into the current users profile, job done.
  4. I seem to remember that as a general guide a 120 points a year is the equivalent to being a full time student. You can also use most ONDs HNDs and Degrees you already hold to count towards your final points, from memory I think a HND is worth 120 points. The OU offers “named” degrees over which you have less control on the modules you can choose, but you do end up with a “BSc in such and such” etc. Previous qualifications aren’t usually worth as much towards named degrees unless they are very closely related.
  5. Unless you have a specific reason to use the county range you could just abandon it all together and use an internal range of your own (192.168 or 127.16 etc)
  6. YouTube - Mythbusters lightbulb experiment 1/2 about 6:12 in
  7. Ill just add my vote for CS new media; Carl hosts my school site and I can personally attest to the absolutely exceptional service.
  8. IANAL but it just looks like newspaper spin to me. In order to sue someone there has to be a measurable (generally financial) loss. You can’t sue for damages just because you are offended as there is no measurable loss there. If being offended caused you to be off work and lose pay – or caused you to become ill and miss out on promotion then that’s a different story but as I see it all the act does is give you the right to bring a case so court if you feel offended – it does not give you the right to damages, that will still have to be proven in court.
  9. If it’s RS-422 its just one of the serial standard – same family as RS232. What its converting from/to?
  10. We use LCR systems, avoid them like the plague.
  11. They used to trade under a different name and they were a complete and utter shambles. I personally wouldn’t give them the time of day.
  12. @roydestroy, When you create the seed and the exe using the DeepFreeze admin console there is an option to select LAN or WAN access on the Advanced-Options tab; you select Wan and put in the ip address of the DeepFeeeze console server and that’s it really. It will let you work over subnets that way.
  13. They are not learning to use computers – they are teaching themselves to use programs which are designed from the ground up to be self taught! No magic there. And they do have a teacher – it’s the programs and OS; by not letting you do anything too stupid and rewarding you (by working) when you get it right. Its nothing more than giving them a skipping rope, they will learn how to skip because the rope won’t let them 'skip wrongly'.
  14. IC, to protect just your room you could isolate yourself by not use their sockets, put your own cabling to your own PCs and switch(es), run your own DHCP and then NAT out to their network for the internet. You could do a similar thing by wirelessing your own machines and again NATing out to their network for the internet.
  15. Just to clarify, are you occupying a room and trying to protect yourself from other rooms/businesses? or are you trying to provide a whole building service which isolates each room?
