Still happens here in areas with older electrics - someone puts a kettle on and the entire block goes down

Not too long ago we had the problem of a dishwasher being turned on in the staffroom which caused an entire building (rather than just one tripswitch!) to have the electric killed, lights, sockets, everything! that was quickly fixed

I notice that there is no section saying that it's inappropriate to use my personal laptop for school use though!! Seriously? I regularly charge my personal mobile at work, but then again I also charge my work mobile at home, I also have a laptop which i use at home - I sometimes even plug it in. Maybe I should bill the school for my electricity and internet.
penfold Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 Can I just say that this thread is of particular interest to me today as my phone has just died (due to me forgetting to charge it last night) and you've guessed it, I was waiting for a phone call at the end of work:rolleyes:. If I had my charger with me I would have charged it, but because I forgot it, I dont have the option to wonder about taking electricity:)
superfletch Posted September 15, 2010 Posted September 15, 2010 A teacher here often brings his golf caddy battery in to charge I don't care what volume of electricity it consumes that bloke is having a giraffe. As for mobiles and laptops - who cares, what goes around comes around. Most people use their personal mobile for work when they have to and those with work mobiles will have to charge them at home occasionally. More interestingly has anyone here ever actually been asked to unplug a personal device - and if so what did they say??

Am I alone it feeling just a little bit guilty in doing this as isn't it technically theft of electricity from your employer? Well as a teacher I'm disgusted! We teachers never, ever take home pens, pencils, paper, labels, envelopes, folders, er what else? oh, yes, BluTak and Sellotape (they're always handy).

somabc Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 (edited) Well yes, you are using the power from the USB port which wasn't being used prior to plugging your phone in, so those 5v have to come from somewhere. It doesn't say to the processor "i'm taking 5v from your supply so deal with it". It says to the PSU "I need 5v, give me it now!" to which the PSU happily responds and pulls a bit more power to supply it. Ah but PSU's are not efficient at low loads so by increasing the load slightly, you waste less electricity as heat! PS This may not be scientifically accurate Edited September 16, 2010 by somabc

This happened because loads of people who ran their cars on chip oil got all their relatives to write to customs and excise saying that they had used 1 litre of cooking oil as automative fuel over the last year. The upshot was customs had to send out lots of demands for less then £1. 1
