How far do you travel to work, how long does it take?

Difficult one, and depends on what you like doing.

 

My previous job was an hour's drive, and by the end of it (2 years) I was really getting sick of it. It wasn't my main reason for leaving, but it was significant enough that the journey was high on my priority list for the job search. My current job is 30 mins on public transport or 45 on the bike - the former doesn't require me to be awake, the latter wakes me up :-)

 

Having said that my Dad has done a similar journey to your one for many years, and doesn't mind it at all (though he does leave early and get home late to avoid rush hour, and thus has free time only at weekends.

 

 

 

If you've not done so, weigh up additional cost (petrol, additional mileage on car), realistically how good this job is and whether a similar thing might come up locally, plus your 2 to 5 year plan (promotion? training? moving on?). Have you got young kids? I did a spell of commuting 1.5 hrs by train recently and quickly got to hate the fact that I only saw my kids awake at the weekend.

 

 

@LosOjos - 7 miles is a nice ride and will take you half the time of your current journey - get the bike out and some decent riding clothes and you'll be fitter, richer and happier :-)

Why does it take you 50 steps then if you're at home?

For me,

Train - 16 minutes walk either side of the station and 8 minutes actually on the train...

Car - between 12 and 35 minutes depending on lights and traffic...

Bike - about an hour...

11 miles each way. Can take anything from 15 to 40 mins depending on traffic, a swing bridge and if I am on the motorbike or car. Average is about 20-25 though.

The job was a huge improvement, but two years of that nearly killed me - and/or drove me completely mental.

 

Now got 50 mins- 1 hour commute, and much better it is too.

 

However I don't regret it at all, as the job is right.

About an 1h 10 mins - 50mins being on the train into london. I personally wouldnt do a trip by car that was gonna take an hour and a half morning and evening.

My brother-in-law, however, has a journey of about 85 miles each way ... Fareham to Silverstone and back. He says he doesn't mind the journey. I think I'd soon get pretty sick of it.

I think anything more than about 20-30 miles and I'd think about moving a bit nearer - a long drive every day would do my head in. Could handle a longer train journey because at least you can chill out and read a book or something to pass the time

I did it the other way, London into Kent. (1hr driving, 2hrs train). Would not recommend it at all.

 

I would say up to 30min is ideal, 1hr is doable, more is just not.

 

How you commute is important too, 1hr driving on the M20/25 is hellish, but 1hr walking home is probably preferable to a 30 min tube journey at rush hour.

12 miles, cycled a couple of times but other half moaned it was too dangerous!

 

I cycle whenever the weather looks like it's going to be kind - we're down to about once a week now. I cycled to day and things are already looking good for Wednesday (fingers crossed).

 

I can make it to work in one Lady GaGa track.

 

It takes that long? wow - that's an eternity!

I used to go from Sutton to Hackney everyday to a school where I was Network Manager, used to get up at 05:30AM and get there for about 07:30ish.

 

I now have a 25min drive to work in Each Dulwich!

if i go to the office (which i rarley do these days) its about 120 mile round trip and can take 4 hours (its a bit better now one of the sets of roadworks on the m62 has gone but there is still another). Normally i do about 80-90 miles a day depends on which school(s) im visiting. Again like others have said i try and start fairly early 8am (i doubt most of my schools would let me in before that and i dont want to be leaving home earlier i already leave before 7 usually). Ive being doing it for over 5 1/2 years now after a while it just becomes routine stick radio on and drive though it does get bad in winter when its dark going to and coming home from work.

I travel around 6 miles each way and it takes about 45mins during term time or 20 outside of term...

 

I used to work all over the country, I'd usually travel atleast 2-3 hours each day and ended up spending 1 or 2 nights a week in a hotel. It really didn't do me any good in the end and I'm glad to be out of it.

I wouldn't mind the drive so much, even with the cost of fuel, if it was a pleasant drive. Even if it was only the last ten minutes were hassle free, without delays. As it is, it is drudgery!

I Travel Approx 9 Miles to Work.. Takes around 30 Minutes providing I leave at the right time, My biggest issue is I travel down 2 of the main roads every morning at the same time as everyone else so it can be pretty fun if something has happened.

 

If I'm out and about it's generally around 20-30 miles if out of the town centre, although the longest one I had to go to so far was Northampton (and be there for 8am) which is around 100 Mile. (normally a nice drive though at that time in a morning to be honest)
