Please don't! The rack looks so pristine and tidy. Adding cables is only going to make it ugly.

Ditto to that: don't cable it! - It's the equivalent of geek porn at the moment..

 

Or if you have to buy some 25cm patch cables!

So's mine but I haven't even got a cab:(

Very frustrating as most things that I need right now are either on my computer (under polythene) or on the internet - erm not connected as no cabinet! Hoping for a better day tomorrow.

I'm hoping for a better day too - managed to get the core up and running but fibers to the other buildings are still not live. Have also realized that I will need another UPS as when I plugged in the new SAN the UPS could not take the load...!!

With a bit of luck should have the fibers working, then it's case of migrating 200 gigs worth of data over...

just need the discipline to not go all birds nest. Also, some horizontal cable managers and a door would be a visual improvement.

 

I'm leaving the side panels and door off as:

 

1. It's in a locked room now [ my office is so much quieter now its been moved ]

2. No one will have access to it apart from me the NM and Caretaker

3. After turning the SAN on the temp rocketed it up

4. Save faffing around when working in there.

Do correct me if I'm wrong but are you not supposed to have at least the sides on to improve the airflow? :D (think I might of heard this in some datacentre mag someday)

Yes, it forces air to flow in a certain direction, where as otherwise cold would just fall down and hot raises.

In a large data centre with airflow management then yes, otherwise no. I have known some racks where the side panels are part of the structural integrity of the rack and the rack frame can twist without the panels on.

I have 5 switches between 2 cabinets and 140 cables that go between them. Every single one of them is grey.... Try repatching that bugger...

Only one way to resolve this....FIGHT!!!

 

Or a third opinion: If you have hot and cold aisles with propperly ducted AC and blanking plates all the way down unfilled space/unit in your rack then yes the sides do help channel the airflow by only allowing the cold air from the front in through the servers maximizing cooling and minimizing leaks of cold air that cannot then be used for cooling.

 

In a standard one or two rack server room without climate isolated aisels then it doen't really help to any measurable extent.

 

They are really good at detering fiddeling from people who have access to the server room though and do make stuff look neater, they can also help with noise damping hence I do have them on the expoed end of the racks in my server rooms.

Ahhh if only :) Think only *cough* BSF *cough* schools will ever get to see this but that sounds about right with what I saw to do with data centers :)

I think that the future is going to be multi circut liquid cooling along with higher acceptable running temperatures and more efficient components that produce less heat. Unfortunatly is is still a fair way off and will be ages before this level trickles down to the scale of most school IT centers.

I'm still trying to persuade my boss to build us a large-scale non-hazardous liquid coolant storage facility. Olymptic-sized for preference, with a rapid inspection launching platform.
