More important what sort of publicity is Canonical going to end up with if they decide to go after a Fairtrade cola, which isn't really competing with them in any way or benefiting from their work (aside from the occasional geeks who might pick up a pack of Ubuntu cola)?

I didn't suggest they might do anything about it, but that doesn't mean they can't be unhappy about it...

So, for example, I could release a brand new type of mini-sponge which is especially soft and call it a Microsoft sponge without worrying about trademark infringement - unless Microsoft decided to go into the sponge-making business.

 

I don't really see much for them to get upset about here.

Yes it meant this long before Canonical hijacked it for their OS. If they tried to sue a judge would throw it out as Cola and Software are not closely related so there is no chance of confusion.

Canonical produce a wide variety of merchandise, I don't think it's quite so clear-cut.

Unless they've started producing drinks I think Fairtrade are pretty much safe.

 

If they wanted to be really adventurous they could even come to some sort of deal for Fairtrade to promote Ubuntu (sensible enough in a way), and Ubuntu to sell the cola through their site.

There's a pizza place near me that has Ubuntu cola, it's actually pretty good, and as they're supporting projects in Malawi, I fully support the company.
