Smoothwall iPad and Apps

Hi,

I have been tasked with getting a iPad on the internet though Smoothwall using SSL Login which was simple it surf's the internet fine, except apps like youtube won't play content does any one have the same experience or know how to get around this.

Does it come up with anything over the content? i.e. writing saying 'blocked' or anything of that nature?

Nah mate it just sits there for ages and then says content not available but on my pc on the same proxy I can access it fine.

Is it not like the Iphone in that for youtube you need to use an app and not the browser? aka no flash?

Yeah it uses a youtube app.

Ipads within school's have problems to do with SSL and Video streaming depending your proxy and ISP. We can browse youtube, but we cant download from the App store or go to any SSL Websites like our VLE

Would be interesting to see a log excerpt for the iPad's attempts to access youtube. May be getting blocked for other reasons.

Hi tom, I am using the same proxy my self and I can get there fine, and access the content, I have been doing a lot of digging and seems like a Apple thing some apps don't support proxy only direct connection and the youtube being one of them. Good old Apple strikes again.

IF its the same app (i would assume so but not sure), then on my iphone going through our SW it works!

Hi Alan, Can you tell me if your using a automatic proxy script or manual proxy. I have been in apple forums and other people have reported this as well. So it could be a OS related thing rather then the app.

Hi Remember this is on an iphone not an ipad. I have put the settings in manually into the iphone. I am using manual ip and on the proxy settings manual and port 801.

but if it were for others, i would set up another port for them.

forgot to say it uses a SW account to authenticate on the proxy.

I have had play, but I have got a old squid proxy use that has nothing but straight proxy access so it looks like a iPad bug.

I have done loads of stuff looking into this and spoken to a mate that is a apple tech and seems to think it looks like some apps are not picking up the proxy settings from the OS which means it looks direct. He said if you use a transparent proxy it works fine so I am going to set one up and going to try that. I let you know if I get it working : - )

In some cases you should be able to stab "transparent" on in smoothie, and you are good to go. This can alter how NTLM auth works though, as it changes the method subtly. Additionally transparent proxies need to be in the data path to work.

With the exception of Safari and the App Store (as far as I've tested), you can't get any app on an iPad or iPhone (tested on 4.0) to successfully use a proxy requiring ntlm auth*.

 

People have been berating Apple about this for years. The underlying OS isn't set up to pass on the required details to the apps.

 

*it might be any authenticating proxy, but I've only tested with ntlm.

NTLM ain't hard to support either, libcurl supports it perfectly well. You do (on non windows/ad platforms) need to prompt for creds, but how hard can it be?

I think it's more "urgh, that's a Windows thing, let's make a token broken effort rather than pulling our socks up and fixing it so corporate users don't hate us".

 

It's a consumer-focused phone, regardless of what Apple say.

Youtube on the iPAD uses quicktime, and from what I can remember, Quicktime does not support/recognise proxy authentication.

 

I could be wrong but I thinks that is where the issue is
