What Happend to asbestos once removed ?

Have a small discussion in our office. We have just had some asbestos removed from our building. I was wondering what happends to it once it has been removed.

 

Does it go to landfill or does it go some place special to be processed !! Help us !

It gets disposed of by landfill or incineration at specialist places (cant mess with this stuff!).

No not at all. There are special sites specifically for dangerous waste such as asbestos and other chemical stuff.

It depends who removes. I've overheard enough conversations in pubs to suggest there are an awful lot of dodgy folk out there that just dump on waste land.

Ok I spoke to a Guy who controls enviromental waste stuff. I travelled back on the M25 the other day and saw signs (when we were in a traffic jam) to say "Asbesdos" in certain areas where they were doing roadworks.

 

They basically are able to dump this in areas that are not going to be used by the general public.

 

If they are putting it in landfill it is normally at the very bottom of the hole, then household waste is dumped on top of it, so it will never come to the surface or be exposed.

Wicked that settled it. Its does do to landfill but a specialist one at that ! So we were both kind of correct !!

There is a difference between Incinerate and Burn.

 

Asbestos fibres are the problem, when incinerated (reduced to ash/powder) the fibres no longer exist.

Yup that looks familiar, we seem to have that one on various pipes and areas around the building, but we did have a large quanitity removed a few years ago off heating pipes so they could get to valves, service ports etc...

I always thought it went to the big Asbestos Ceiling in the sky... where no nasty engineers drill a naughty hole in them while noone is looking!

No, asbestos is not dangerous unless it is distubred by either drilling into it or somehow releasing the fibres into the air! Most of the floors in older schools are made from asbestos too.

Asbestos is fine if it is left alone. It is usually sealed, unless the sealer has deteriorated or it is disturbed, it will not be a problem. Hence the warning signs.

 

It is safer to leave it alone than to replace it.

Well we've all got to go someday, but you'll only die from Asbestos related illnesses if you've been drilling holes in it or standing around watching someone else drill. Don't do that.

No, drilling into asbestos is not one of the best things that one can do to prolong life. I have to be very carefull in the holidays as I spend my time doing projector and network cable installs, I can spot the stuff a mile of now.

Never though about that before, I suppose that would have been a major concern for the clearup teams!

Whoa I was only joking I know the dangers of asbestos! Thanks for the helpful advice anyway. A friend of mine works in asbestos removal and is always drumming it into me.

I think the point is, as in life, it's not always what you do that kills you but what the other idiot does.
