BBC News - O2 network scraps unlimited data for smartphones Got wind of it earlier today when O2 emailed me this: O2 | iPhone 4 | Tariffs for iPhone So do I still go for the new iPhone or buy an iPhone 3GS now? I download a massive amount of data each month on my G1 and I don't think 500MB is going to be enough. What do others think?

garethEds Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 I wonder how many customers O2 will loose because of this. I download a bit as well. Especially into iTunes. I personally think it was a unique selling point for O2. I'm not aware of any other operator that was offering unlimited data. Does anyone know differently? Gareth

I access quite a few email accounts, most of which have emails that have picture attachments, as well as doing most of my surfing using the phone. FaceBook, Twitter, and all the news sites that I subscribe to, and all the rest, just add to it. I'm a G1 junkie!

mac_shinobi Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Just registered my interest with vodafone and orange as already with 02 and have never once been shown loyalty and I was with them with the iphone 3g, 3gs and still no loyalty and now with them wanting to charge for data I still want the iphone 4 but if possible might swap to vodafone or orange ( will see what there tarrifs are any different or not ref the data charge ) - I don't use more then 500mb a month on my 3G or 3GS when I had them both most of my data usage was done on my own wifi connection which I pay for ref my own net connection with bethere so thats a moot point. 1

Arthur Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 There's no way Orange and Vodafone are going to offer "unlimited" data since people are going to buy the new iPhone regardless of whether they do so or not. Also, the cost of the contracts is starting to get ridiculous. How long will it be before it reaches 36 months?

Rydra Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Capping on internet connections of any sort IMO is ridiculous. It will kill half the media apps currently available. Want to watch apple trailers on your ipad? You'll get about 3 before hitting your peak. listen to last.fm or similar? maybe a week if your lucky. If you use your iphone as a sat nav.... don't go on a long journey, cos streaming google maps is going to eat it too. 500mb for £35/month is appaling. needs to be at least 3 times that much to be reasonable, in an age where data usage is going UPWARDS, reducing caps to limits that better suit 10 years ago is a horrible idea, and after being with 02 (and BT before that) for 12 years, I will now probably change to orange; at least that way i can get cheap cinema tickets to make up for it.

I think it is about time someone took these companies to court over their misuse of the word 'unlimited'. Its getting ridiculous now.
Butters Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Infuriated with 02 at the minute, to get a new iPhone 4 I'll have to pay £200 for the handset and then switch from my £30 a month contract to a new 18 month one with the same minutes for £45. Simply put they can swivel! 1

featured_spectre Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Just had a poke around on various Terms and Conditions, Tesco and Vodaphone already capped the unlimited to 750mb a month for both existing customers and new customers as did Orange and TMobile, who did it to 1GB. O2 are just following suit but taking it to the lowest ever seen on a UK Network.

Batman Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 To be fair, they must incur a cost for offering the service so it seems sensible for them to try to control the usage. You don't get something for nothing.
GrumbleDook Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 The larger proportion of my data use on my iPod will be for mail, twitter, basic web stuff. Pretty much everything else, I am in an area with Wi-Fi so not a problem.
