contink Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Yet again I'm suffering from a rather nasty bug that's knocked my balance slightly out of kilter and left me wondering whether I should just go back to bed for a week... (not an option sadly!). What I don't understand is that I've had numerous colds and other joyous symptoms, thanks to the four schools I support, and all manner of other bugs that normally I'd have shrugged off... You'd think that with all that exposure I'd have an immune system capable of laughing ebola off as just a flesh wound or something... Not anymore it seems... I guess it's the lack of sleep, stress of working all the hours while also looking after a baby, finding "us" time and the rest that's knocking my system for six... Yeah, on reflection a bit of a no-brainer really isn't it. It's gotten so I'm wondering if lotions and potions mightn't be a good idea... Sleep would, naturally but we're just not managing that just yet... *sigh*.. Yes, I'm a man with a particularly bad cold and feeling the need for some magic fairy dust to make it all better.. 1
AyatollahPies Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Cut out Dairy from your diet for a week and see how you feel.
witch Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Are you eating properly? Take some vitamins and minerals to give you a bit of energy. If your immune system isn't working very well, you will keep getting these bugs. Also, get some exercise - slumping on the sofa sounds great but you need to get the heart pumping a bit to feel better. Take the baby out for a stroll - hopefully the baby will sleep and you and your partner can have some 'us' time. Don't stress about that either - as long as you take the time to hug and talk a bit - even for 5 mins here and there, and make sure that she knows she is still important to you, that will sort itself out as the baby gets older. Other than that - Ahhhhhh - sorry you are feeling ill....virtual chicken soup??
tommej Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Sounds like you need some chicken or tomato soup - the cure for everything according to my nan!
Little-Miss Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I feel your Pain. I've been ill all over the half term and still am. My head feels like a lead weight and i just want to sleeepppp. Thought id got past this nonesense.
tech_guy Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Go to the doctor and get signed off work for a couple of weeks? Fatigue / stress/ exhaustion?
AyatollahPies Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Replace dairy with whisky. Works a treat. I'm pondering the taste of Whisky on toast.
Hightower Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I heard on the news yesterday that the average sick days per year per person has decreased. I haven't had a sick day in years, but I know plenty of people who drop off as soon as they snap a toe nail. My brother works with people high up in the council who in the past year have had about 40% sick time (a married couple who work together).
tech_guy Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I'm pondering the taste of Whisky on toast. I once made scrambled eggs with a dash of Jack Daniels - I can recommend it if you're partial to JD. And in porridge too. With lots of sugar. Although I stop at brushing my teeth with it, because that's just silly.
tom_newton Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 7years: 2 sick days. Nothing for ~5 years - score 1 for whisky on toast.
russdev Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Interestly same as lot of people I have a good immune system due to working in schools. But for first year after my son was born I had got everything under the sun... Russ
Joh619 Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I have a cup of Echinacea and cranberry/rasberry tea every day and I have felt so much better since I started. When I first started working in education I literally had a cold every other week. It's quite nice too and makes a change from normal tea/coffee. Echinacea is thought to serve as a stimulant to the body's immune system by activating white blood cells, whereby making it more difficult for foreign bodies to infect cells. Some evidence from other clinical studies appears to indicate that Echinacea may have antiviral and antifungal effects, possibly adding to its infection fighting ability.
Dos_Box Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 It seems that I'm not the only one. This year has been hell, with one flu or cold after another. Things have been getting better since the weather warmed up though. I guess with the long winter we've just had, being couped up in houses with the heating whacked up and the windows shut hasn't done us any favours.
BatchFile Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 (edited) I'm pondering the taste of Whisky on toast. Take one jar of smart price marmalade - remove 1 tablespoonful and replace with whisky. Stir well. THAT on toast is FANTASTIC! Edited June 8, 2010 by BatchFile misspelled replase... replace... Hic!

fafster Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Stress can really mess up your immune system. Spend more time outdoors, and try and get some exercise.
tech_guy Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 I started my working life on 14th October 1984, and have only taken a total of 5 days off work due to sickness / illness since then. I guess I must be either committed or stupid or both.
Rydra Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 My old job, i either ended up with stomach trouble or migranes at least once a month or two. Since my new job that i've been at 5-6 months now, i've not had a single migrane, not one, no stomach troubles. I knew my boss was bad for me, now I'm (technically) my own boss (being the NM and one man band) I seem to get along with the boss better. I at least argue less, and somehow ended up doing less work, but achieving more!
witch Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Right - I'm not a happy bunny I'm never ill - I feel a bit carp occasionally but generally I am very healthy. (> 2 days off a year) Until I read this thread. Now I have a sore throat, a thick head and I have got the hot and cold shivers. I can't be ill - I have governors meetings after work and then an exercise class to go to. Tomorrow is even worse. Sunday I have a big concert, playing with the Bournemouth Synphony Orchestra. I have taken enough Vitamin C to last me a year. I CAN'T be ill
SYNACK Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I can comiserate, I have a cold too. Wasn't too bad until I had to do a 16 hour span of work overnight, now it is decidedly unplesent.
mattx Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I'm just sick in the head all the time...... I was off one day a few weeks ago but I have a valid excuse - my tennis elbow was so bad I could not even drive or bike into work. I did say if someone picks me up I'll come in but they said not to worry.....
contink Posted June 9, 2010 Author Posted June 9, 2010 Managed to find some time to respond which probably speaks volumes about my workload but just wanted to say thanks for the support as much because it seems, misery does indeed like company... That said, Witch, I didn't give you that cold, nooooo... What I have been doing is rationalising my workload and whilst I'd love to get signed off, my boss is a complete jerk and never allows me time off, somehow he always seems to know when I'm shirking too... Oh the joys of being self employed I have however reached a point where my schools work has suffered and I'm withdrawing my services from two of them to allow me to focus properly on the remaining two. I'm hoping I've lucked out on finding a company with a similar ethos to mine as well.. The thought of leaving them high and dry come summer was definitely not attractive! Stress wise that should help a lot although those who have an inkling* as to my roles will know I also have an eCommerce operation relating to printers (yes, you'd never have guessed would you! ) which has taken up more and more time and needs more attention. *apologies for the awful pun Anyway, that coupled with the child minder agreeing to take the little one for a full day instead of the morning only on one of my "Dad" days means I can cut through my to-do list and reduce the stress even further. It is scary though how easy it is, as a couple of newbie parents you can conspire between you to run yourselves into the ground because you're marginally less dead than your partner. We'll pull back soon enough, especially now that my wife has a new job to start in September and can leave the toxic headteacher well and truly behind from her current job. Putting her in the redundancy pool while she was on maternity was not exactly "nice" or sensible given her skillset... Anyway, turned into more of a life story but thanks again all... Snot city is soooo much fun...
Duane_Dibbley Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Hot curry with LOADS of garlic in...the ultimate bug killer. Both chili and garlic are good for the immune system, garlic also has antiseptic properties. Followed by a pint of lemsip works every time for me 1
danrhodes Posted June 10, 2010 Posted June 10, 2010 Agreed, I love garlic, for my tea last night I had Wild Mushroom Torteollini with Chilli and Garlic, then chilli and garlic flakes ground on top with cheese!! Not sure about the pint of lemsip though, those things are rank! D 1
