Apart from the Motorola Milestone (which I'm discounting because of the annoying case lip by the keyboard) I need something very very similar to my HTC Touch Pro as I can't do without a keyboard for emailing and the like! I've got the latest WM 6.5 custom ROM and Sense UI on there but I'm missing out on all the nice apps on Android as they've pretty much dried up for WM now and WM7 looks a pile of crap from a tech perspective... no cabs, no copy \ apaste whaaaaa

Hightower Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 Well I'm stuck with my G1 until November, so last night thought I'd try to kick start it into life. Backed up everything on it, and rooted it with Cyanogen's v4 image. It does run quicker now, but maybe that's because there's less crap on it. The best feature though (and the reason I rooted it) is now my applications are stored on a 512meg partition on my SD card instead of on the (limited) phone memory. Who knows - my G1 might actually last until November now!

HTC is currently working on an upgrade to android 2.2 (froyo to the android junkies) which has apps to SD and other enhancements. Should be out later on in the year. As for fave apps: Advanced task killer Astro file manager with bluetooth addon BBC news Dictionary.com Google earth Google Maps Google mail Google sky maps Google translate Facebook for android Last.fm Layer reality browser Meebo IM Paper toss (lol) Skype (from 3) Spotify Youtube Quite funny how I like a lot of the google apps eh...? also like the HTC widgets as they add a nice gloss to the funtionality of the phone.

LosOjos Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 (edited) Not really an app suggestion, more an anti-app suggestion: don't bother with automatic task killers! Android effectively 'freezes' apps when they're not in use and uses no processor power running them (unless they're requesting updates, like your mail client) and in fact there is a school of thought (that I agree with having tried out auto app killers) that you'll actually use up more power by forcing Android to initialize apps every time you run them. Task killers are useful however if you have an app that has frozen as you can't actually kill the task without loading up enough apps to boot it out of RAM, so they are useful in that respect, it's just the automation I'd be wary of. EDIT: Also, the theory that auto task killers free up memory, while technically true, serves no benefit: apps use the memory that they need and if there's not enough, that's when Android starts killing tasks to free up more, so you'll notice no real speed benefits by using a task killer Edited June 9, 2010 by LosOjos

There is absolutely noone around me that has an android phone let alone talk about one. lol I'm glad there is an alternative to the iPhone and that people readily adopt it to embrace something different. It seems like everyone has an iPhone now, and its nice to have a cool alternative that offers that level of functionality with the flexibility of being open ended. Some decent app suggestions coming forward too, theres a few there that I like the look of. As for the task manager, I think i've only got it just to have it if that makes sense. I don't really tend to go on a regular hunt for extra free ram. Android does seem to do a pretty good job of managing its resources and closing stuff that hasnt been used for a while.

We offer staff Blackberries, Palms, Windows Mobile and about 10 android phones, but still 95% of the phones that are ordered are iPhones. Despite the fact that the 'new', 'exciting' features of iPhone 4 (like multitasking and threaded email) were in my G1 in 2008.

roty80 Posted June 9, 2010 Posted June 9, 2010 I don't know if you know this but Google mail asks you to change to a @gmail address if you haven't got one when you login to your email now (in a browser). If you do it causes problems with your android phone and you need to do a factory reset. Wait until Google fixes this, if they do, and in the meantime keep your @googlemail address. Or if you don't mind doing a reset then obviously you can swap (but I think you loose all your apps and if you have paid for any you have to pay again as it is a different account).
