I've just done my Android 2.2 update today. The update has been rolled out OTA in europe. My phone worked perfectly after the update, however I did a factory reset just to clear any left over junk. I did prompt my phone to check for the update manually and it found it. It appears that flash 10.1 comes preinstalled. I spent hours wondering why I couldnt find it in the market but functionality on flash websites (miniclip for example) does reveal that flash is present. HTC has delivered the goods on this model, lets hope other recent HTC handsets get a froyo update too.

Hmm iPlayer... its not showing up in the market on my desire.

As far as I know, Android 2.2 is already officially released for the Nexus One in certain countries. HTC are currently working to bring it to the desire, and hopefully other recent models. Not sure about other manufacturers with existing handsets. Given how long it took some manufacturers to provide an upgrade from 1.x to 2.1, it could be a long time if at all

I must admit this is a great thread. There is absolutely noone around me that has an android phone let alone talk about one. lol I'm glad there is an alternative to the iPhone and that people readily adopt it to embrace something different. It seems like everyone has an iPhone now, and its nice to have a cool alternative that offers that level of functionality with the flexibility of being open ended. Some decent app suggestions coming forward too, theres a few there that I like the look of. As for the task manager, I think i've only got it just to have it if that makes sense. I don't really tend to go on a regular hunt for extra free ram. Android does seem to do a pretty good job of managing its resources and closing stuff that hasnt been used for a while.

I love my HTC Desire. Only thing that bugs me is the lack of apps to SD card. HTC is currently working on an upgrade to android 2.2 (froyo to the android junkies) which has apps to SD and other enhancements. Should be out later on in the year. I got a simular problem from the clients when upgrading Sophos console to version 4. The clients were running Sophos 7.6, which needed to upgrade to v9.0. Make sure you configure the update manager with the correct settings and add a software subscription to your update manager(s). In the update managers tab, right click your software subscription and add the packages you need to your subscription. (Sophos 9 ect...) Once you have configured the update manager, there should be no need for the legacy update library if you still have it. I forgot where I removed it from, but there should be some info from sophos on how to do it. I think you remove the packages from legacy updating, and it then gives you the option to remove it. Check the update policy that filters down to your clients and make sure the update source is valid to the server your on. Even with the server configured, it was a real PITA to get all the clients to update. They all reported update failures, but one by one the clients started sorting themselves out. beware they'll all need a reboot too to remove the error status. Many of the clients would not update, and I had to do the rounds to sort them out with a manual install/update. You can run the installer from \\yourserver\SophosUpdate\CIDs\yourCID\SAVSCFXP\Setup.exe

I get the same problem using sysprep. The lack of a clear definition of the problem doesnt make it an easy one to troubleshoot. I'm wondering if manufacturer branding of the OS is causing the problems. I was recommended to look at this Sysprep a Windows 7 Machine and I am currently working through it.

IntelBurnTest is a good free stress testing program. It uses linpack to stress the CPU, and you can choose the level of stress to put the system through. the Maximum setting uses all available system memory and puts extreme levels of stress on the CPU. Its the first time i've heard of this behaviour carrying on after the RAID has successfully rebuilt. Processor usage that high could indicate a problem with bus mastering/DMA transfers from an item of hardware. Why it would decide to start that after a disk failure I don't know. As you say, having time to disable devices and update drivers will be the key. Have you had time to fully power down the server and turn the power off for a few seconds at the plug? I've had experience of hardware becoming stuck in a loop due to a glitch in the driver and this has been a good fix on many an occasion.

I'd keep uninstalling drivers and monitor it as I go. You'd want to make sure you have the means to reinstall the drivers before you remove them though Those Wacom tablet drivers look like they're using a few MB's... If the issue doesnt happen in safe mode then you'll know for sure that its something 3rd party that the computer is loading up thats doing it.

+1 for Android. I love my Android phone, and its only a matter of time before it evolves to become part of other devices. (with a better price tag too) I like apple devices and cannot doubt thier quality build, but the price tag and closed development nature puts me off. TBH, with the iPad, yes its a nifty device but i think there are already too many devices that have that area covered. - this made me laugh btw.

You could also remove inheritance from the OU that your using and use your new policy to define the exact changes you'd like without the other policies from the domain filtering down. Also note that it can take up to 2 reboots for group policy changes to come into effect.

Windows 7 uses a different version of the group policy administritive templates stored on your server and will only allow for limited policy managment. One way round this is to populate the central store with the newer .admx templates and use the Remote Server Administration tools on your Windows 7 workstation to configure them. I'd advise also making a new container and policy for the windows 7 machine(s) The proceedure is here: Deploying Group Policy Using Windows Vista I know it specifies vista, but the proceedure is the same. That RAID 5 array is using a lot of CPU time because of all the calculations for the Parity data. RAID 5 can hit the CPU a fair bit with a lot of sustained I/O writes and a rebuild will even more so. Unfortunatly, this kind of performance hit is unavoidable while rebuilding the array. Like has been suggested, and offline rebuild is the only other option but perhaps the greater of two evils if you need your server online... The only way to truely minimise the overhead from a RAID5 is to spend lots of money on a card with full hardware processing of the parity data. Most, if not all integrated RAID controllers will tax the CPU for this duty.

is the new print server integrated as part of your domain? Couple of things to try, Have a look through the GPO settings on the server just to make sure there's no printer driver restrictions that could affect things. Also, you could try looking at the driver settings in the print server properties. If the drivers are configured using any specialised windows 7 settings, it could make it incompatible with XP. You could also try using the admin pack from an XP workstation to connect to the print server and check the settings.

Hi I've been having ongoing problems with W7 mandatory profiles. The problem is the fact that W7 machines randomly allow access to certain pupils, while others get a failed logon. When these symptoms occur some pupils occasionally have the deployed printers greyed out too. The problem can be temporarily fixed by deleting the profiles and registry profile information. All pupils use the same V2 mandatory profile from a server 2003 DC. The profile was created using the windows enabler method. Group policy is managed from a W7 RSAT admin workstation with the central store populated with .admx files. I am aware that lots has changed in the V2 profiles, including roaming registry settings that are no longer as flexible as it was in XP. Grrrr! why cant printer settings stay with the profile too. I am currently trying to create a profile using the official microsoft method but sysprep is giving me a couple of problems. I'm hoping that a profile created in the proper sense will help ease some of the problems with logging on and off (which seem like registry problems to me) I have managed to create the unattend.xml file with true set to "true" in the specialise pass. I have also run the commands as documented by microsoft to initiate the copy of the customised local profile over the default user profile, however when the machine reboots I get an error saying "Windows could not finish configuring the system. To attempt to resume configuration, restart the computer." The computer then gets stuck in a loop with this message on every reboot. Suffice to say, I'm not the biggest fan of V2 profiles at the moment. I like windows 7, and i'd like as many pupils to have the chance to use it as is possible but it cant happen when things are as twitchy as they are. I hope microsoft continue work to try and ease the compatibility issues with thier V2 profiles. I noticed the slow loading of blank backgrounds has been fixed already. Any input welcome Cheers, Mike

Good afternoon, I also have been messing about with profiles on Windows 7. The problem i'm having is that after a period of time, any windows 7 machine can randomly deny logon attempts. We'll often end up with certain machines only granting access to certain users. All the users use the same mandatory profile on the server with the .v2 extension on the folder, and when a logon attempt is successfull everything appears to work correctly. I've struggled to recreate the problem in testing, and it only appears to occur during the average daily use of the computer. The server profile was created from a clean domain profile and copied using the windows enabler method. I'm running Server 2003 and use the windows 7 RSAT to administer group policy on the win 7 machines. I've populated the central store with .admx files and group policy works ok. If anyone has got any input it'd be much appreciated. i'm guessing its the profile at fault, possibly not unloading the registry settings properly. My next task would be to try the sysprep profile method, but i'm a little unsure about the unattend.xml file. Cheers, Mike

I just want to say I appreciate all the feedback in this thread. Thanks guys. Seems like a few random questions have turned into a good exchange of information. Its not easy to find all the ins and outs of these license schemes if your on the outside looking in. Something perhaps only experience can cator for. Everything I do I want to do properly, to offer robust solutions to problems at the lowest possible cost and to minimise wastage. Whatever I do, I know its going to cost the school a lot of money. I just need to find the best value solution to our scenario. The head is keen to minimise high initial outlay costs as its just to keep everything going for another two years, until our local authority close the site and change the three tier system over to the two tier system.

It appears to be a perfect example of how microsoft has everyone stitched up with thier software... It seems that in many scenario's end users will essentially have to purchase the software twice in order to use it in a compliant manner. From what I understand about volume licenses not being transferrable, I take it the license goes in the bin when the computer is recycled. New licenses have to be bought for the new machines even though they may have a valid OEM license that enables you to use your current version of windows. Correct me if i'm wrong at any stage. I'm just detailing what is being said. So no volume licensing can be done on machines that arent licensed already. hmm. Catch twenty-two isnt it? Does select licensing allow the purchase of full license for a machine that doesnt already have a license? also, does office licensing work in the same way or is the license transferrable based on the machine that its installed upon? Whatever the score it, i'll be needing some accurate quotes to get the ball rolling. It seems software licensing isnt as simple as it should be. Too much is open to interpretation, and I've even had to correct some software distributors on the type of licenses they've been trying to sell. Sounds like buying the XP OS licenses outright is a good idea, while perhaps having the office licenses subscription based? Can that be done? I'll also need to add in the cost of the bulk CAL's and server software licenses. Would that be subscription or bought outright? Also does anyone recommend any particular microsoft resellers? much appreciated. thanks again.

Thanks for the reply. I have checked, and the only physical proof of a licence is the windows COA stamped on the side of the newer computers in the building. It is possible that there was a microsoft agreement at some stage,maybe it expired and was not renewed. There is no proof of anything that currently covers our use of the software. We also don't have any genuine install media for the packages that are in use. I'm not sure if its better to get a quote on a microsoft agreement that allows us to buy the bulk licenses or just buy the packages from a third party. I'm keen to sort out as much of this as the budget will allow, even if I can't get it all done in one go, it at least shows some willing on the matter.

Hi guys, very interesting forums you have here. i have some advice to ask so I thought now would be a good time for my first post. Basically keeping it short, I've taken over the IT support role in a middle school. I've been clearing up various mess, mistakes and incomplete jobs from my predecessor. (a long old list.....) One of the burning issues is software licensing. We have about 160 machines including staff laptops about the place and most of them appear to be missing licenses for microsoft products running on them. I have replaced quite a few computers with newer units that at least have a windows license but there is no evidence that any office installation is properly licensed. Also there is only one copy of Server 2003 to the 3 Servers that are running. Given the fact that the school is running with a mix of new and old machines I have standardised everything to run Windows XP SP3 with Office 2003 Pro SP3. I have tallied up what I need to get everything legal: 84 Windows XP Professional 156 Office 2003 Professional 2 Windows server 2003 CAL's?? Is there any cost effective way to cover our use of the existing MS products? So far I have only found software distributors that sell discounted products on a per item basis. I have found Windows XP OEM packages for about £85 each and office 2007 enterprise at £35 each but it still seems quite expensive given the amount I have to buy. I dont think vista or windows 7 is a way forward yet given the fact some of our machines are up to 5 years old. Running office 2007 should be ok though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
