HodgeHi Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Hi ya all, I just need to do a simple thing like stop the icons moving around on the desktop as the pupils are currently sharing a re-directed desktop. But i can not do it. I am struggling to get it to work. How would one go about stopping pupils moving them around making a mess of the desktop? I found a little app called desklock which DOES do it (when physically run)and i tried to get it to run when logging in but it does not work. It has an error when looking at the classes. If this worked it would solve my problems. Any ideas anyone? As always thanks for any help. PS active desktop is enabled.
Midget Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 is it REALLY that important that they have a tidy desktop? Surely turning on auto arrange and disabling right click will at least stop it looking messy, but they'll still be able to change the order.
HodgeHi Posted December 5, 2006 Author Posted December 5, 2006 I suppose you are right, but the users are primary school kids and if its not in the same place then thay say they can't find it.
plexer Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 desklock comes from: http://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Skrommel/ It's an autohotkey script and the actualy script is available from that page maybe some tweaking would get it to work how you want? Ben
Midget Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 ahhhhh now I understand. In that case why not remove all icons from the desktop except their home drive shortcut, tinternet browser, and word or whatever the most used program is and stop them saving things to the desktop. This way if they do move the order, it will still be easy to find. Do they all have the same login? is it AD or local login? If local, consider Deep Freeze which will restore the PC to its original state every time it is restarted.
HodgeHi Posted December 5, 2006 Author Posted December 5, 2006 Wheyhey. I just managed to get it to run. Its pretty good software. i created a shortcut in the startup folder of the all users profile to point at the exe in the apps share and gave the security rights full control to that folder only and it works. The users cannot move the icons anymore. Perhaps not the best workaround but it will do for now... Thanks for pointing out the script location though plextor. Will look into it.
HodgeHi Posted December 5, 2006 Author Posted December 5, 2006 My apologies. Strange even though i read your name i still read it as plextor. Burn Baby Burn.
john Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 My apologies. Strange even though i read your name i still read it as plextor. Burn Baby Burn.hehe I've read it as that as well, do they even exist still?
Norphy Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 Yeah, Plextor are still going. They're still about three times the price of the competition too
alonebfg Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 ive got a redirected desktop and a man profile then even if they do change it bingo log back on and its still the same also the have only got read access to the desktop share stops them adding on things they also share the same profile so if i need to make a change i change profile from man to dat log on as test account for that class profile make change log off change profile back to man and its all set to go again.
SteveT Posted December 5, 2006 Posted December 5, 2006 You give them a desktop???? Silly person. Blank (empty) desktop; start button; and list programs, My Docs. etc there. Makes for an easy life.
Jon Posted December 6, 2006 Posted December 6, 2006 Does anybody on here use Winsuite on thier networks?
