AngryITGuy Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Apple confirms iPad UK launch on May 28 A little bit more than what I was possibly willing to pay for the entry level, although I haven't quite made my mind up yet either way. So who else is going to be getting one?
GrumbleDook Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I know someone going to the States shortly so it would work out cheaper to get them to pick one up. I'll probably wait until the HandHeld Learning Conference though when I should be picking up for use by the team.
mattx Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 600 quid for a giant turd. Amazing what people will purchase these days. 1
localzuk Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I was expecting from about £350 - £500, but that's kinda ridiculous.
RabbieBurns Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Apple iPad Australian Launch And Prices Announced the base model priced at $629 Thats 378.863 GBP at todays xe.com rate Anyone want me to post them one?
mac_shinobi Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 @rabbieburns tempting ... Unless you send it as a gift, doesn't the recipient get charged with a wodge of tax ?
RabbieBurns Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 Yes. Either that or mark it Big Paperweight. Value $2. And itll get right through.. ;p
RabbieBurns Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 (edited) @rabbieburns tempting ... 'edited for swearing' me off they rip off the UK market so much they do. Watch your language please Rabbie. Edited May 8, 2010 by Dos_Box
Sylv3r Posted May 7, 2010 Posted May 7, 2010 I have the 32 bit version and I love it. I can certainly see some fantastic educational benefits of students using these as the designated PLD (Personal Learning Devices) in projects such as BSF etc. They certainly pack a lot of potential and not just an expensive e-book reader like most people have said.
StewartKnight Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Mattx reminds me of the saying.... You can't polish a t3%d, but stick an apple logo on it and people will pay hundreds for it! 2
localzuk Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Its actually only around £50 a unit more than in the USA - the rest is VAT, and I'd imagine that some of that £50 is customs/import duty.
StewartKnight Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 Mattx reminds me of the saying.... You can't polish a t3%d, but stick an apple logo on it and people will pay hundreds for it! I forgot to add the rip-off extra 25% for UK customers!
tech_guy Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I was going to buy one, but not at these prices. My brother-in-law is going to pick one up for me the next time he goes to the states.

garethedmondson Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I too am gutted with the price on this. However I will probably get one, play with it for 6 months, get bored and then try and sell it on. I've told my wife that as Head of ICT in the school the pupils expect me to have the latest technologies :-) :-) I just don't know yet. GJE
localzuk Posted May 8, 2010 Posted May 8, 2010 I think I'll get one of these Archos 5 Android Tablet UMPC 32g solid state drive New on eBay (end time 04-Jun-10 11:20:02 BST) or these Google Android 7" Netbook Tablet PC UMPC MID 1.2GHZ on eBay (end time 09-May-10 16:21:15 BST) instead.
tech_guy Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 I'm getting one because I've opened my big mouth and now I'm being expected to produce some educational apps for it.....along with a host of other ideas. I still think it's going to be pretty big in education & training.
tech_guy Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 If you get one, can I come over and smash it up please ? I said please...... Oh go on, but only after I've finished with it first.
garethedmondson Posted May 9, 2010 Posted May 9, 2010 If I pre-order one tomorrow does anyone know when it would arrive? I'm assuming the shops would get them first and I'd get mine a week later. This information will help me decide whether I go to a shop to get one or order online. I wonder if you can pre-order through the shops? That would be pretty cool. GJE
garethedmondson Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 How annying. A quick look at the Apple UK Education store this morning reveals no discount in price for the iPad. The cheapest is still £429 with free shipping. That's not fair :-( GJE
Guest theeldergeek Posted May 10, 2010 Posted May 10, 2010 I still think it's going to be pretty big in education & training. Big as in budget you mean?
