It's lovely around where I am - I am not in the flight path for Heathrow but only live 5 miles from it and I have to say the air quality has improved quite a bit the last few days and it's just so quiet !!

This matter needs to be reported to the World Health Organisation. Clearly this ash cloud is having an adverse effect on rational thinking!

(actually, my MIL is lovely too.... and is presently sitting in my lounge!)

Surely you knew when you bought / rented you house that Heathrow was so close!!??!!

I would imagine that for many people living in the vicinity of an airport is through a necessity rather than through choice? The sudden tranquillity of closed airspace is obviously very noticeable. I live over an hour away from Gatwick on the Sussex coast, so no real noise pollution from planes, but at work, it is directly under some southbound flights departing the UK, and they are still relatively low in the sky when going overhead. I notice it quite significantly first thing in the morning. I guess if it is there all the time, you don't tend to notice it as you get used to it, but for it to suddenly not be there must be quite significant.

I have lived in this area all my life [ apart from a years stint in North Wales ] & like I said I am not in the flight path, in fact I get more noise from Northolt than Heathrow. But the air quality is staggering better at the moment. I have just dropped one of my boys off to a party at Heathrow bowling and I have to say it was weird not having the constant noise of planes taking off and landing.

I read that the ferries are taking advantage. £60 return tickets for £180. The Brittany Ferry from Santander is full as are the Eurostar trains. A lot of people in the Algarve (and elsewhere I expect) are really struggling. No chance of a flight back before Friday and running out of cash. My daughter is going to take in lodgers.

A few of our teachers and the head are out of the country at the mo... could be interesting lol

 

Didn't think the planes would have a noticable effect on the air quality in the area... amazed that its cleared up so quickly though.

I think you'd only notice an improvement if you lived close to a busy airport, like the smell of aviation fuel all the time, or lack of it at the present time. But like you say, lovely clear skies.

I have a technician stuck in Spain and a network manager who can't go on holiday.

 

The schools principal, vice principal and 2 out of 5 assistant principals were all stuck yesterday (don't think that will have changed).

 

On top of that at least 6 other members of teaching staff are stuck in various places around the world.

 

I tongue-in-cheek mentioned on Friday, it was poor planning by the leadership team to have the 2 main staff out of the country at the same time.

 

It'll be interesting to see how things work out over the next week - I seriously doubt if they'll all make it back before the next weekend.

 

Wonder how this will affect peoples leave entitlement / pay? Can I give the network manager his leave back? Should the technician have to use more leave or not get paid?

Pay will be docked and they will need to claim loss of earnings from the travel insurance I would expect, last time we had a member of staff back late (due to his airline cancelling the flight) he lost a days pay and his travel insurance coughed up when he proved his loss to them. We have the site manager stuck in Canada and think we have another member of staff abroad but that may grow on Monday when we come back.

 

We know of a few students all due to sit exams this first week back / 2nd week back that are stuck though!! (Oral Exams and Performing Arts ones)

 

If the NM has not gone and comes in instead I would hope the school would let him move his leave though, but guess that's a local school thing, if he comes to work I would hope they would.

 

Our biggest worry will be that if we are a few down that Ofsted will turn up when we are students and staff stuck abroad!

Where you live in London is normally dictated by how much money you have not whether or not you want to live under a flight path, or next to a railway line, or a busy road, or above a chip shop ;)

 

Although most of West London including the nice parts are under the flight path to Heathrow. The South has Gatwick, The East has City / Stansted and the North has Luton.

My point wasn't about where you live in London, but more about living IN London

 

To me London is like an Apple product, lots of style, but ultimately vacuous

 

I love visiting our Nations capital, but I wouldn't want to like there, especially if I wasn't completely loaded with money.

 

Like an Apple product, I can see the attraction of London, but would I really want to live there?
