krisd32 Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 how has anybody dealt with this before? the problem is we have 65 new machines coming in a month and i need a solution to dispose of the old equipment for as little ££££ as possible. if any body knows of a company in lancs that is cheap etc.. could you please let me have the details! thanks in advance

krisd32 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 we not so lucky to have the luxury of a minibus! and then they would have a go at you anyway for turning up with crt monitors that they supposedly won't accept! you need a weee liscence or something now don't you ? to dispose of anything electrical or hazourdous. thanks
Geoff Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I dunno, I've dumped the odd bit of equipment off at the Preston centre occasionally. I suspect the lads there have a 'special' arrangement though. I often see familar bits of kit appearing on a stall at Preston market the following weekend. But, what do I care. I got rid of it for free.

mrforgetful Posted November 9, 2006 Posted November 9, 2006 I don't believe the WEEEEEEE things are effective until January, so until then just throw them in your skip. Have you looked into donating them to charity? Though when we looked at that a few weeks ago we foudn ours were too slow and they wouldn't have them!

krisd32 Posted November 9, 2006 Author Posted November 9, 2006 i think thats the problem they need to be over p3 800 to donate to charity or around that spec, they'll accept 15" crt's though. unlucky for me the ones i'm getting rid of are either celeron 533(majority)and a few celeron 1ghz. so they won't have them!

This requirement stems from the re-designation of waste IT, in the European Waste Catalogue (EWC), as hazardous and relates particularly to cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors and the batteries installed in base units and laptops. This means that you, our customers, now may become “producers†of Hazardous Waste. If you generate more than 200kgs of Hazardous Waste per year (approximately 10 x 17†monitors) then you now have a legal duty to register your premises with EA." We registered (approx £18.) at http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/subjects/waste/1019330/1217981/1218079/?lang=_e It costs approx £65 per pallet to get rid of (full collection service) A pallet is either 12 17" CRT or about 18 15" CRT. I think we got about 14-18 PC's to a pallet. Be aware that if you just dump them in a skip you are breaking the law... oh, and also helping wreck the planet for future generations! Junior schools are told they have to upgrade their computers, but who wants their old 266 and 15" monitors? We have tried parents, we have tried charities, we don't have a few pounds for people to take them away. I'm told that some schools use black plastic bags in the centre of skips, but I certainly couldn't comment.

What happens to the old equipment that you collect - do you re-use as much of it as you can? How do you go about collecting equipment from a school, do you provide a skip or cage or does the school make a pile somewhere and you take it away in a van at some point? DNA-IT-Recycling Posted June 9, 2009 Posted June 9, 2009 We cover all of England and South Wales. Our process focuses on refurbishment of equipment and the full recycling of the waste. This enables us to offer this free service as we maximize the value of output. We normally collect in large vans but this can change depending on load sizes. Allot of companies will state they are licensed because they may have a carriers license. However to process your equipment i.e. data wipe or refurbish they would also require a form of waste management license or an exemption. They should also leave you with a waste transfer note which acknowledges the transfer of ownership/responsibility to the company that collects your items. 2

CARE uses your old PCs, laptops, monitors, peripherals, and networking equipment to help meet the urgent need for PCs in schools and colleges throughout Ghana. It is a non-profit organisation and only asks for a £10 donation for each PC you donate to help to cover its costs. If you are based in the West Sussex area then I would highly recommend getting involved. chrbb Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 Our LEA will take equipment off our hands, sometimes we have to wait for a space in their lockup. Other alternatives when desperate - local computer recycling place took crt monitors and provided us with a disposal certificate for a nominal cost, local lions organisation take computers and monitors for overseas schools, local company provide skip for mass disposal of equipment. Bit cautious of taking stuff to tip as we have the schools name emblazoned over everything and wouldn't want to end up on BBC news as fly tippers/irresponsible/data protection issue. We work on the basis that if there is paperwork to prove you've disposed of equipment in properly - blame shouldn't end up at our feet!
