Do you ever run a computer without an antivirus and/or firewall?
selu replied to bladedanny's topic in General Chat
True but if you noticed a slowdown in what you were doing on your computer you would just reboot. No antivirus is flawless keylogging, spam broadcasting, can all happen with antivirus running. Its all about the user experiance no av = fast pc reboot to fix means a monkey can fix it no need for geeks onsite. -

if you run steadystate deepfreeze timegate etc why use antivirus as well because even if you get a virus you could just reboot your computer to fix it. In fact if you want to test a virus to see what it does then this is a good way to do it. If you run an internet cafe or a public pc system or primary school without a domain etc just to access internet services etc why would you want bloatware antivirus to manage all you need is a pc with any of the above software installed to do this. Computer broken reboot it to fix no virus can infect a read only system use a pen drive to save docs lock c:\ no virus no antivirus no updates no problems this is the only way i would set up a pc running no antivirus. -
Quick update I am off to Birmingham tommorow to collect some computers for the IT Suite if anyone is removing any working tft monitors between Blackpool and Birmingham I would gladly take them off your hands. Steve;)

Firstly thanks Ric you have got the ball rolling. So far I have upgraded our reception classrooms with the TFT Screens donated by Ric previously they had 14 inch compaq crt monitors. Guess what I saw teachers cleaning their own desks after the upgrade. I have pluged in some of the Thin stations donated by Ric Compaq T20S they work and look like they will be very easy to set up this is the future ! The reaction re the tft monitors was fantastic so we ha have a new wishlist. We can make good use of any amount of TFT Monitors 15" or over (that work) Compaq T20 or similar thinstations Suggestions of how to get some free Microsoft server software and cals to operate the thin stations legitimately. I have been away for a week at Glastonbury so am now refreshed and inspired the future is green. I was looking at green power wind turbines solar power etc. We are applying for a grant for soler panels to power our IT suite if successfull we could become the first school in the UK to be running of free power and free reused IT equipment or am I wrong.

All of your suggestions are very useful. As you can see I need advice on procuring some free / recycled pc base stations for a primary school. The whys and wherefores on email filtering have long since been dealt with on this forum. I can look after myself re the spammers This is a genuine post / plea on behalf of a hard working school that has fallen on hard times. Despite this we are a “good school” We aim to improve the learning environment here beyond recognition with your help I am sure we can achieve that goal. With your help/ donated equipment we will be podcasting our own radio station. The first production will be dedicated to the people who have helped us. Let’s keep on topic and focused. Thanks selu

Landline number. Collection wise I have a volvo estate and a petrol account so collection from anywhere in the UK could be possable. Obviously Lancashire Cumbria Manchester Liverpool area would be best but to meet our goal I am prepared to travel that extra mile as you can see.

...that is the idea of posting this post, to ask around. The two main reasons we cannot use the laptops are firstly the age of the laptops and secondly security (leaving laptops laying around in a busy primary school isn't the best of ideas). Once we have a fully functioning reliable IT suite we intend on using the laptops for "special lessons" as and when required. As for removing the batteries, it may be not a good idea as the PAT testers will/might fail them (at the testers discretion - possibly costing the school more money). We are currently applying for all the equiptment grants we can think of, if anybody has any suggestions for available grants/sponsorship in exchange for equiptment it would be greatly appreciated. We are trying to be a "green school" and are not asking for money, we are trying to get a full IT suite for free within 2 weeks, not the 2 years or so that the grants we have read about take. Why borrow money to buy new equiptment when businesses, government departments, data centers etc etc replace there equiptment every 3 years. Why send it to landfill when we can make good use of it? Thanks for your reply, you have picked up on some useful points.

I have been working at this primary school for 3 years now but unfortunately we have no money at all in our IT budget. There are many reasons for this but the main one is that we bought 36 laptops 4 years ago brand new in trolleys that just are not up to the job. Batteries and wireless problems are the main problem. (Unfixable with no money). So back to basics is the plan second user crt monitors from the local high school are abundant so we need some donated base units with xp pro license (oem attached) with original recovery media if available for compliance. 2 gb processors and 512 memory would be nice as a minimum spec but would not mind adding some second hand memory etc they dont need mint. Has anyone ever done this before or attempted to do this before? Can your school/business offer any donated base units? We plan to use work experience people to help us install the units. Openoffice and other freeware and our existing site licensed software like textbase textease etc If you can help us please PM me or reply to this thread.

If they have an xp licence and work I would like them for a primary school project I am working on if they are suitable. NO CHARGE can collect.

Linux box had crossed my mind. Linkstation is old not new spent 4 hours trying with shared folders. No rules then just make the effort
-
I need some advice please we need to create a shared location on our pier to pier network we have a linkstation (as a shared drive but I cannot get the password protected folders option to allow me to log in, when I create a shared folder with a user name and password.) So I have given up with that idea and am now looking for a free way to do it. Or an industry standard way of doing it. Or someone who knows how we are suppost to do it to meet whatever criteria we need to meet if you know what i mean

All fixed and patched. Waiting now for the next one to slip past the s-p-os net.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\] this deletes the run folder and everything in it I have included the whole fix I intend to use as a zip file fixautorunvirus.zip
