alonebfg I don't know if your ref does cover the point, I cannot see the script, (I dunno why) several very clever people seem to be arguing over it, and it seems to be adding a printer. The .vbs in the other replys seems to be a reasonable alternative (and more understandable to me), but if I were able to add it to the GPO (how?) then surely this would effect people logging on outside the suite. The school is a JMI with only 16 computers in the suite, the startup folder is managable, but the better I do- the longer the tea breaks.

For a while now I've been trying to set a specific printer as the default printer for all users in a computer suite. The domain is managed by Ranger but as the school does not have their print manager the support desk won't help. I found a bit of code that will set the default, but only for a user, by saving it as a .cmd and placing it in the all users startup folder of every work station, anyone logging in has the required network printer as default. It is tested and works (but only two days so far). Is there a more elegant solution? the line of code is- rundll32 printui.dll,PrintUIEntry /y /n\\PrintServer\PrinterSharedName where of course you have to substitute for printserver and printersharedname.

Well I fixed it, by accident. Its a long story but I changed the pupils group (profile?) to staff, then back to pupil, and powerpoint printed. I figure ranger doesn't always remove or maybe, add all that it should.

Well had ranger off - and back on again- (RTFM) but powerpoint didn't find a printer. Just to add to the piquancy of the situation nobody knows the username or the password for the local administrator on the machines.

Of course when I turned up the priorities had changed but I did try two experiments with power point. I made the path to the printer an exception as outlined on the Ranger website. This didn't work, possibly because the website claims that only 3 exceptions are possible- but whoever set up the system had already made 4 (article out of date?) or I got the path wrong or it just ain't the problem. I loaded powerpoint viewer locally, right clicked on a picture- and it printed- that page. Didn't remove ranger as time was short and I was unsure about restoring it. I have brought the manual home to study- why do modern manuals lack a decent index? the ZX81 manual was brilliant. Oh, right, rangerinstall- should have guessed.

Wish I had known that last week! Sorry to seem dense but is it as easy to replace? ( I thought that I had read the manual, well skimmed it)

Not sure what you mean by player, tried google and it came up with microsoft power point viewer, (free from Microsoft). Will look into that but won't be able to test until Thursday.

To remove ranger I would probably have to rebuild the machine- and I only get 3 hours a week at this school. Ranger does seem less intrusive than RM, but I don't know if it is removable. On re-reading my first statement it does seem a bit ambiguous, I can print in powerpoint but having studied the manual and used the management console, I cannot find how to remove the restrictions on the pupils. The Ranger web site knowledge base does say that Ranger security will stop illegal paths, but I tried unticking the 'Apply Ranger security' box'.

Yes, the rest of Office works ok along with a selection of educational programs, as far a I can tell it's just Powerpoint. The ranger web site mentioned problems changing printers because this is a prohibited path, but does not mention not being able to find printers. The printer is attached to one of the computers, but Powerpoint doesn't work on that machine either. The printer was installed with a script to make it available to all users. There is a 2nd printer available, don't know how that was installed, it was already there when I started at this school this term I tried removing all security on pupils to see if that worked, but it didn't and I'm not to sure where to go next. PS I put all the security back on after testing! perplexed of St Albans

I spend a few hours at a school using Ranger administrative 'ware. The pupils cannot print powerpoint presentations (powerpoint for 9 year olds, whatever next!). Powerpoint gives a message that the computer hasn't got a printer attached. Got to be a permissions thingy as I can print but I cannot find the relevant tick box. Any ideas

Panic over, the school is running version 5 and having reread the thread I have till Jan to sort it out and " www.sophos.com/support...17586.html" to help

Funny how the rules to save the planet work, once there was illegal dumping of rubble, then it was fridges, now its computers and monitors. Junior schools are told they have to upgrade their computers, but who wants their old 266 and 15" monitors? We have tried parents, we have tried charities, we don't have a few pounds for people to take them away. I'm told that some schools use black plastic bags in the centre of skips, but I certainly couldn't comment.

Oh dear, I feel a faint spell coming on I am a peripatetic technician and one of my schools runs Sophos (installed by NS Optimum, but that’s another thread). Logons are very slow now, I thought that was the Ethernet switch problem (installed by NS Optimum, could be another thread). But now it seems it could be Sophos. Hertfordshire pays for McAfee so I could find how to take Sophos off and install McAfee, but there seems to be problems there too. I’m paid for 3 hours a week at this school, I’ve got 25 computers and a 2 servers to do, which way do I jump, McAfee or SophosV5, what do I do to get 5 minutes to fix the printer?

Wish I had found this thread earlier. The new Head at one of my schools brought Optimum in with her and they put in a new computer suite. It was late, but mostly worked. My complaint is the difficulty getting a response out of the company. I told the Head my opinion of optimum but she bought interactive boards off of them- hugely late and poorly installed. Only the invoices were on time, demanding money for work not done! Well, she is now converted. In my effort to get things done I gave my email and Rose has contacted me......
