Thanks Michael....great post, which I have just stumbled across! I've only found one small problem having followed the instructions for 3.5.5 as above and that is that within Options > Security the tick box for 'Use a master password' is not grayed out, meaning that users can set and change a master password. I have used your standard mozilla.cfg file, apart from our proxy/homepage settings, but please advise if there is another line that I need to add to fix this.

Thanks MrBeatnik. I'd totally overlooked the hidden 'Default' user profile...double :doh:! Deleting the offending icons from there has solved the problem. Muchos gracias! Now onto the next head scratcher...

Hi there I hope someone can help as this is driving me nuts! We've got some new PCs and all is working fine apart from the desktop redirection, which is failing because two desktop icons are being created by default in the local profile ('C:\Documents and Settings\anotheruser\Desktop'). Does anyone please know how stop XP Pro creating these icons for every new user? Many thanks.

We have three Dell 3100 Colour Laser Printers available for sale. All are in good working order, with varying amounts of toner left in them, and are still in use until half-term when they are being upgraded. One does need a replacement drum unit soon, and is also close to running out of black toner, but we have one of each of those here. We also have one magenta high-capacity toner on offer. We are looking for around £50 each for the printers, apart from the one that requires the new drum unit (RRP £99) and black toner (RRP £30ish), which we would like £100 for (still a bargain I’m sure you’ll agree). Meanwhile, the magenta toner is on offer for £25 (approx. half the RRP). Sorry, no original boxes and buyer to arrange collection (Worthing, West Sussex). No I hadn't, that's a new one to me...but I have now, and when I drill down to the File System setting nothing appears. All other policies appear to be working properly so do you know what else I can try?

I am trying to configure file permissions on a folder (Granada Database) for students using the 'Computer Configuration, Windows Settings, Security Settings, File System' setting in Group Policy on Windows Server 2003, but without success. I have set the path as %SystemDrive%\Toolkit\Granada Database, with 'Configure this file or folder then Propagate inheritable permissions to all subfolders and files' ticked. I have also added the necessary security group. Having run gpupdate I am still having no joy getting this to work. Can anyone please offer any pointers as to what I am missing or what to try next.

Thanks again for all your help. I've had a busy weekend! I tried Recuva first, but it just kept seizing after a few hours, so then I tried PC Inspector, which took ages (over 12 hours!), but that eventually allowed me to grab back some files, which I hope will be the right thing when I see the teacher shortly. Fingers crossed. I now know for next time (if, and I hope it doesn't, the need arises).

The data wasn't on the server long enough to be backed up unfortunately. And no, the previous technician had not set up Shadow Copies on the drive...oh how I wish he had! Thanks for the other tips. I presume I use any such software directly on the server, am I right?

Hello All I hope someone can save me from being lynched by a teacher! Whilst on their class machine (XP Pro) and fiddling about with their documents on their network drive (Windows Server 2003) I managed to delete a folder with ALL their Activstudio flipcharts in! They don't know yet, so I am hoping to fix the problem before they come back in on Monday. Obviously it's not in the Recycle Bin so any advice on where or how I can recover it, if at all, would greatly appreciate please. I have looked at a couple of the old threads on this sort of issue, but I'm not sure if they exactly apply to my problem. However, if someone knows that it is covered somewhere else then please direct me to it. Sorry, I am new in this job, which is a change of career for me also, plus I am the only one in the school looking after the ICT, so I'm having great fun as you can imagine!
