Fingerprint reliability in year 5-8

I'm hoping to get some feedback from other schools with kids in these age ranges on the reliability of any fingerprint based systems they may have in place.

 

Such as library systems and cashless catering systems.

 

I've been monitoring the reliability of our cashless catering system and there seems to be a definite issue with younger fingers. Add in the fact that about 5% of our kids seem not to have properly defined prints, and it makes life difficult.

 

So, what do other people think of their systems?

I've tried thumbs too, seem just as bad.

We had a fingerprint scanner with microlibrarian and it was hopeless. It couldn't handle little fingers and we spent a fortune on wetwipes. Now, they have a barcode tattooed on their forehead

We even have problems here with some of our smaller Year 7's, their finger print just isn't well enough defined for the system to pick it up properly. I would have thought this would be even more of a problem at primary level.

 

We've about 3 or 4 students who just have account numbers and don't use the biometric system. Unfortunitely this means they have to top up on-line or by giving money to our finance person as they can't use the cash loaders.

Personally, If biometrics are failing, give them a swipe card or barcode in their school diary/journal.

Sometimes, things are a losng battle, and aren't worth persevering with, especially when there's alternatives.

Indeed, for those that don't have working prints, we issue cards with barcodes on. (Having them carry their planner would be problematic due to the size and them needing to carry a tray).

We have the library system and our years 3,4 5 and 6 generally don't have a problem. We find that wiping with a dry 'microfibre' cloth works better than a wet wipe

Try using the sticky side of sellotape to clean by just sticking it down on the finger reader and then lifting off again this works for us.

 

It helps define the fingerprint of the young person more clearly.

 

Plus the regime of actually washing their hands before dinner may help also.

We often have issues with our feeder primary students who visit the school before they join us in Year 7's. I am not sure whether its the size of their fingers or just the nervous kids may just have sweaty fingers!
