Licensing for MS Office 97

Hello - I'm setting up a number of EeePC mini laptops (again).

They had Openoffice on them before which was ok but had many features we don't need (primary age kids). As a result they took ages to open up etc.

I found an old disk for MS Office 97 in a hunt around the place and would like to install this on them as I have it on my Netbook and it runs fast and smooth...

We obviously had licenses for this many years ago (no idea how many... Could be 1 could be 30!)

 

What do you reckon in terms of licensing?

 

Or is there another free office suite out there which is really good and lightweight.

I seriously doubt that you would be able to obtain any form of licensing for Office 97 now, AFAIK Microsoft canned all support for it years ago.

 

There isn't really any other office suites I know of besides Office and OpenOffice. Corel has WordPerfect Office, but I have no idea what kind of resources that needs.

 

The only other thing I can think of is to use something like Google Docs or another online office suite, which does need internet access of course.

Maybe Microsoft works? you can but that for around £7-8.

Works will probably still be power hungry. can you not customise the install of OpenOffice for what you want, IE the bare metal and nothing else fancy on top?

Maybe, yes.

As it's not really possible to get Office 97 licenses these days maybe I should just install that then and not worry...

I doubt microsoft would see it like that unfourtunatly, I'd either try and figure out how many licences you may have(I'd presume most primaries would have very few pc's between 97 & 2000) or purchase office 2k7 licenses and use the downgrade rights.
