Print Management Software

I know this is probably repeating what has been done before but there are a few elements that we need covered that seem to span various threads.

 

As every school does, we need to save money but I have noticed that we seem to have gone backwards in terms of printing. Staff seem to want to print everything so we often have the ridiculous situation of them printing documents from emails only to find a hard copy in their pigeon hole as a well! Also I want to see / control what the pupils are doing.

 

So my requirements:

 

1. Reliable software that can be installed on a Windows 2003 print server that has good reporting facilities and quota allocation by links to AD groups.

 

2. Ideally I'd like it to have some way of telling the pupils what they have used / have left using a workstation client that has an MSI that can be deployed by Group Policy.

 

3. Needs to work on Thin Clients (Sun boxes connected to Sun servers with Windows 2003 on).

 

Any pros / cons / you can describe would also be helpful.

Try PapercutNG (Software for print quota and print control management. Your print accounting and monitoring solution - PaperCut). They have a trial version and I've heard good reports.

 

Another one is Pcounter from Altman Technologies (Altman Technologies).

I can second Papercut, its very good and will do everything you want it to do and a lot more.

I'll third papercut - brilliant piece of software that's constantly being updated . The latest version that was released this week added some very nice scripting capabilities that I've just started playing with

Fourth vote for papercut! Using it here very successfully, setup with photocopiers and proximity cards too

PyKota on a Debian box for me... much cheaper and works ace!

 

Works fine with Windows, Linux and Mac. Fat, thin and Sun Rays work fine too

We are using papercut MF - for copiers and printers.

 

Very stable and easy to deploy.

Works with AD groups nicely.

Has loads of reporting options and printing filters.

 

Running it on a windows 2003 server.

 

Very happy with it.

 

Having said that, I've heard good things about PCounter too.
