Photocopiers

The head is looking very closely at the possibility of installing a colour photocopier to reduce printing costs within a certain area of the school- the staff room.

 

Obviously the outlay is more expensive, but are they really any cheaper?

 

Any recommendations on makes/models? Are they easy to setup?

If you run a print server for your other printers you can simply network it as you would a standard printer. Thats what we do. Just a case of assigning it a fixed IP, adding the printer on the server and having the correct drivers available. This also means if you use any sort of print monitoring software (e.g. Papercut) this will also monitor / control who is printing to said photocopier.

 

Whether it is more economical for you will depend on the offer you get regarding price per page. I am not sure how 1x colour photocopier compared to say 1x colour laserjet printer compares price wise over say 5 years (considering the cost of the copier in the first place + price per sheet against toner for the laserjet....as an example).

 

I would have thought photocopiers would be more economical due to the ability to remove multiple desktop printers from use........depends what you plan on doing I suppose?

Well all being well, other printers will be removed. In the staff room, they have a networked black and a colour.

Are you going to lease the copier - if so a lot of companies include the toner as part of the monthly cost - so can work out cheaper if you get staff to send al big jobs to the photocopier

Riso are the cheapest cost per page wise, less than 1p for colour. Print quality isn't quite as good as laser based printers, but the the Riso ones are faster.

Ricoh are very good, have a few of those around. Sharp are also good and slightly cheaper than Ricoh.

Avoid Xerox and be careful on the type of contract you go for, some have very nasty gotchas.

Riso are hugely expensive to lease - we looked a this, for their full colour machines. (ie. HC Ink for High Speed Printing - Riso United Kingdom) The rest of their machines are black (or spot colour) only. Also, they are not very cheap to run unless you are printing a bulk number of pages at once.

 

Ricoh is what we have here, and they are very good.

 

Xerox are expensive, but feature rich - although, the control panel is confusing as hell compared to Ricoh.

 

Canon - personal experience is awful, i'd have got more printing done if i had a group of monkeys.

we do this across the school, costs about 8-10p a colour sheet on our ricoh printer including cost of paper. black on its own is about 2p saves about 10-12p on a standard Hp/brother black printer.

 

Its defo cheaper then the new hp printers i would say. Our photocopier also does scan to email if you set it up correctly. plus the other bits and bobs

We pay 3.9p per sheet colour, and 0.33p per b&w on mono on our ricoh machines here, so the pricing varies a lot - depending on your volumes and supplier.

We have a couple of these which are colour photocopiers Ricoh C4000

 

and yes we have them set up so that different departments have to put in a departmental code so that they can use the copier, so that the charges are sent back to the dept. but if you don't tell them the codes they cant photocopy!!

Ricoh sell via resellers. There are loads of them around the country. We use Annodata ourselves, but there are many others - look in your local yellow pages for photocopier companies.

 

And on preventing copying, they have a basic authentication system built in, but if you want any form of tracking, you can use PaperCut MF with them, which integrates into your network in general.

Setup limits in the print managment software and when users logon to the copier they will only have "x amount" of money to waste from either personal account or department account.

 

as for the copiers

 

cannon imo offer great quality but at a price and the machines are restrictive.

 

ricoh and sharp are very good machines and i would probably look at these 2.

We have networked nashuatec copiers leased from M2 Digital. I dont know about other copier makes but these seem pretty good, fully functional, easy to use, rarely have problems. Toner and staples included in the contracts. We've also bought some HP 4700 colour laser off them. I think we have the option of converting them to leased.

We have 4 networked photocopiers, 2 are colour. The colour printing costs have gone right down because the photocopiers are a fair distance from the ICT suites, so it is no longer a simple process to print in colour. Fore some reason mono has become acceptable.

 

Lord knows what the costs are for photocoping? The things seem to be running day and night!

 

Ours are Canon and once I'd ploughed through the settings, dead easy to install. They also scan but very slowly.

I was just about to point that out you will find some differences but a lot of the time its just a different badge on the front.

I'm a huge fan of Toshiba copiers, best ones Ive ever used and I've now used an awful lot of them (had 12 on one site and they were mixed Tosh / Ricoh (and its other names) / Kyocera) and the best by far was the Toshibas.
