localzuk Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 So, the holiday is here, and I'm now working through the usual holiday tasks: 1. Updating servers with the >50 updates each that MS felt it should release individually. 2. Replacing broken sound systems in a couple of classrooms 3. Co-ordinating the installation of a bunch of cabling, and some projectors 4. Installing new machines in rooms 5. Updating workstation images And as if that wasn't enough, our trusty server running ISA has just died, after having a good 7 year lifespan. RIP server. Anyone else having this much fun?
mb2k01 Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Twiddling my thumbs waiting for the Smoothwall SWG Appliance to come.... tomorrow! Finishing off Exchange 2010 bits until then.
3s-gtech Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 My jobs. Convert VMWare Server virtual machine to ESXi (it's just running now) Build the Mac Mini Server when it comes Fit PCs in new IT suites Look at installing a second (backup) server room in another building Not bad really!
Domino Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I really, really miss having these periods of relative downtime. here people moan if somethings down over a weekend....
sparkeh Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Bad start for me. I had to turn off the servers for the electricians to test the circuits, after powering them on again the SCCM console is full off errors! What an earth has happened?!
teejay Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Well its do the SIMS/FMS upgrade, any server updates etc today. Rest of week office door is locked and I'm getting my head into some serious W7/Server 2008 R2 infrastructure R&D work :-)
pagelad Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Adding some more drive to our server here, Has 2 x 146 in Mirrored, added another 146 and made into a RAID5 Have learned that microsoft seem to thing ASR recovery is a simple easy process, in actually fact its a pain in the a**
localzuk Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Oops, just found out the steps the installation guy is using have been condemned for 2 years. Why we still have them I do not know. All this trouble because I said the ceiling is 3.5m when it is actually 4m. Glad the guy isn't a whinger though, and has just got on with it
Cools Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) turning off the Wifi and see what teachers come in and grump about it not working.. "but i told you 2 weeks ago. i will turn it off. and there's a Notice on the noticeboard for them 2 weeks .. and on the Intranet pages" Edited February 15, 2010 by Cools
01hanstu Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Dont you just think that the holidays are the best time of the school year, no teachers complaining when you have told them a billion times before, no students 'forgot my password' (thats next week). My jobs include: Updating all the servers .. AKA Hell. Getting our AV equipment repaired and awaiting an order of 20 shiny new RM Ones, and the usuall. Enjoy your little piece of heven, I know I am
teejay Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Well, just had pupils banging on my door, who I ignored, followed by the ICT teacher phoning me complaining that they can't print or access some of the network resources. The teacher has set up a catch up session and hadn't bothered to tell us or anyone else and is now moaning like mad. Well, tough, its maintenance day which has been booked for ages and all staff informed on multiple occaisions by various means.
FN-GM Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 (edited) Nothing to do All machines are up and running. All upto date. Just got to do a laptop image and its nearly done I am playing with various things in virtual machines now Edited February 15, 2010 by FN-GM
localzuk Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 I've had 2 teachers in today so far - one asking if SIMS is up, and the other just asking how I was. Not too bad I don't think
01hanstu Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I honestly think they dont understand the word 'maintainance'. I had 1 member of staff phone in but it was sorted over the phone. last holidays I told everyone I was taking the servers offline for a few days and they honeslty come to me complaining that they couldn't get on the shared area 'ITS OFFLINE!!!' Drives me mad when they have catch-up sessions over the holidays. If they didnt let the students play games maybe they wouldn't need to catch-up. Sorry im just having my winge for the week. - Stu
01hanstu Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Nothing to do All machines are up and running. All upto date. Just got to do a laptop image and its nearly done Feet up. relax and ejoy the peace, next week will be busy always is here 1
teejay Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Yeah, we have catch up and other things booked for the rest of the week, this is the day I negotiated with the head to take the network down, but of course you always get one muppet teacher at least:mad:
bashy Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Come in to find the xen server network has lost any idea that it had servers running on it and now can't find any info. Anybody ever had to dr xen servers? Panic is fast appearing over the shoulder.....................................
localzuk Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Ooh, just discovered the file server has only 500Mb left on its system drive. Bad Nagios! Not telling me earlier!!
sidewinder Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I've had the amazingly fun job of removing a huge, extremely heavy, tower UPS lying on its side at the bottom of our server cabinet. Couldnt get the battery out because the flap couldnt open enough because of the 'lip' at the bottom of the cab, for the same reason i couldnt just slide the thing out. So after taking most of the panels off, I just about managed to get enough leverage (and didnt pull a muscle) to lift it onto the lip, thus could get the battery out and thus could lift the rest out. This took like an hour. Was meant to be a 5 minute job
teddybear Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I'm installing loads of stuff, great getting peace and quiet to do it. It always amazes me though that teachers come in during the holidays then go on about how 'silly they are' for being in... If I was on holiday I wouldn't be thinking about this place at all!
localzuk Posted February 15, 2010 Author Posted February 15, 2010 Found out that the loft space above the room where a projector is being moved has 18 inches of insulation in it, and no walkway - so the contractor had to blindly feel his way from one beam to the next, without falling through, using a head torch as there's no lights up there.
IanT Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Im in all week, I've managed to get done so far: Teaming of NICs on Servers Replaced Science Printer Fixed Mathes IWB Also got contractors in doing bits too cabs.........they were late and have only done one cab and now they've left for the day!!
Ric_ Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 Come in to find the xen server network has lost any idea that it had servers running on it and now can't find any info. Anybody ever had to dr xen servers? Panic is fast appearing over the shoulder..................................... Give me a shout! I'll PM my number. My tasks for today: 1. Apply Smoothwall updates 2. Update Sun 7110 software 3. Upgrade XenServer to 5.5 Update 2 4. Apply SIMS patches ^^^ All done Tomorrow's Tasks: 1. Make the wireless work like I want it to rather than the way it works now! (BlueSocket don't make life easy!)
tcook Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 I wish i even had weeks where i could take my network down. . . . . Lonly Evenings and Bank Holidays for me. . . . Bad times
01hanstu Posted February 15, 2010 Posted February 15, 2010 We just purchased adobe cs4 premium, and are deciding how on earth we can roll it out, but I think a brew will have the answer, or if not i'll right the other site/team.
