Hosting Moodle

Well im think about hosting my own moodle. Were do i start? I understand that it is ideally to be installed on linux but what version of linux and how do i go about getting this installed? does any one know where there is a guide on how to do this or be of some assistance. Many Thanks

With my slightly-biased hat on, I suggest you start with a Ubuntu (or Debian) install because it includes well-maintained Moodle packages in the official repositories.

some web hosting companies now provide 1 click installs for moodle (Uk2 for 1) might be worth looking into that. It can be tricky to setup

Depends if you want to look into MIS integration or AD integration - if so, then this will be useless....

Also, in my experience, Moodle isn't that difficult to install. It's getting the hosting environment right that's the difficult part.

It's not really.

 

I was lucky - because we had a lot of new kit to play with this year I was able to set up two virtual servers - ran Moodle, Apache, PHP on one (also the moodledata store) and MYSQL on the other .. although many setups run fine with all running on one.

I came from a Red Hat background so I'll recommend CentOS. Ubuntu is just as good though so it simply depends on what you prefer.

 

Firstly - Plan ahead, work out your disk requirements now and for the future. Is this a physical box or a virtual one? If you're using any slightly unusual server hardware will your Linux distro support it?

 

Second - LAMP stack. Easy to set up these days, there's one click installers, you can put it all on during the installation, you can apt-get/yum it or you can install it from RPM. Read your Moodle docs on the best-practices for the setup.

 

Third - Stick Moodle on, configure it, then get playing.

 

Mine has been happily running on a Red Hat box for nearly four years. Lots of lessons learnt along the way, but it's been worth it.

We have ours running on Windows 2003/PHP/MySQL/FastCGI/Wincache.

 

Serves about 150 simultaneous users, and flies along!

UKWSD also do single click installs for Moodle - UK Web Hosting - UK Reseller Hosting - cPanel Web Hosting - WHM - Installatron I use these guys for my own personal site however you may want to investigate how much bandwith you would be using up (reguarly uploading/download docs ect).
