Free equivalent of HP OpenView

What I'm after is some kind of free equivalent (freeware/opensource) to and OpenView-style app.

 

I want to be able to monitor SNMP traps and links between points on my network. Ideally, the client interface should be Windows-based or web-based but Linux is cool too.

 

Some way of integrating with Groupcall would also be cool so that I could have SMS messages sent to me when everything starts falling apart

Been here before. Nagios will run quite happily on LAMP. Nagios can alert you in several ways. Email notification should be sufficent I guess but it will SMS and/or Page if required.

 

As well as Nagios, also consider:

 

NTOP - Good for monitoring traffic between specific points.

Cacti - Good for seeing long term trends on SNMP enabled devices.

Nagios is what we use here to monitor the BGfL network. Free. opensource,runs on linux and a large user and developer base. Ticks all the right boxes I think!

No problem. Shout if you get stuck. Nagios takes a bit of headache time to get your brain round how it works. One good tip though, physical placement of your monitoring box is critical. It needs to be as central as possible. Here at Carr Hill its sat on the main switch. I'd recommend you do the same.

What's the ideal Unix OS for using the Nagios software. I've got the latest Fedora Core, but I know there are lots of others out there.

As long as its Linux it'll be fine. Personally I don't like RPM based distros and something like Fedora is really aimed at desktop rather than server work. You might want to try Debian. Although personally I use Gentoo.

It installed fine on my test Debian box - just need to configure it now!

 

I will probably steal a seperate box for it from somewhere (maybe an old server - P4 should do the trick ) then I can site it at the heart of my network.

Anyway with regards to open source things, http://www.sourceforge.net does a lot of good open source projects so it may be worth while searching around on there.
