Linfit Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use the .sch.uk domain. It does create long e-mail adddresses but people have got used to it. I feel its helpful if there is a coherent naming system for things like this; having a .sch.uk domain clearly and unambiguously identifies us as a school and I think this is generally helpful. It still surprises me though when giving my e-mail address on the phone how many people who apparently deal with schools all the time seem unfamiliar with the format, and want to finish it off as co.uk.

CAM Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use our .org.uk name for our school site, though our EMail goes through LEA systems and uses their .org address (which is shared by multiple schools). The kids also used to have a .sch.uk address for EMail but recently they have been receiving an address on the LEA's .org domain.

Being an indipendent shcool we are not tied into "having" to do anything so I was wondering who out there used theirs, and if not what were you using and why? The reason for my question is someone has got the head worked up about chaning our domain name (right AFTER we've had new prospectuses and a website created ). I really don't like the idea I prefer that we can be identified as a school. so I was canvassing opinions. We use ours - at least your prospectus story isn't as bad as ours - where the Head decided she wanted a .com address, and printed and distributed the prospectus & headed letter paper before checking whether it was available. It wasn't...and somehow it was my fault that the owner didn't want to give it up - numpties!

SimpleSi Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 All my schools used to .lancsngfl.ac.uk and are now .lancs.sch.uk A few are longwinded as they conflict with other schools with the same name and get a -pri added in but everyone seems happy with them regards Simon
soveryapt Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 I use it at my schools, simply because: 1) comes as part of the deal with the webspace so why would SLT pay the extra 2) shows it's an official site I have one school though that has a .co.uk which is longer than their sch.uk address!! I'm sure that defeats the object! lol .. I suppose if you have one, you might as well use it, even if you just have is as a parked/forwarded domain to your posh .com etc, just means it shows it's an official site and all that.

Our address is broadmead.org.uk, but some flyers were printed for broadmead.org which is a retirement home. Ooops....

denon101 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We use ours, for both email and website. However at the end of this academic year we are stopping. For email anyway. As RM charge the LEA about 28k for the whole authority per year.

elsiegee40 Posted January 21, 2010 Posted January 21, 2010 We are independent and use .co.uk There are 3 other prep schools in the locality - one is owned by GDST and uses a .gdst.net domain, one uses .com and the third uses .co.uk like us The 2 private secondaries here use .co.uk and their rival in the next town uses .org!
