Internet Explorer - A program on your computer has corrupted...

Hi Folks,

 

Whenever a user opens up IE8 a message box appears saying "A program on your computer has corrupted your deafult search provider setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this setting to your original search provder, Live Search (search.live.com). Internet Explorer will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providers.

 

Then the manage Add-ons box appears higlighted on the Search Providers page.

 

We use Mandatory Profiles which are loaded on the server.

 

Group Policy is setup to not show the search box on the address bar, and also not allow changes to be made to the search provider and not open up the Manage Add-Ons window

 

Anyone know how we can overcome this!

 

I did a quick google search and it apears to be a common problem but it menioned something about modifying the Reg key at HKEY_Current_Users\%Userprofile%\Application Data

 

But this was all related to a standalone computer and one user, we're on a network with mandatory profiles.

As far as I know you can download new group policy templates for IE8 which allow you to set search provider amongst other settings- might be worth replacing your existing settings with the IE8 specific ADM/ADMX and setting the search provider in there.

 

Won't resolve any corruption in the profile but will hopefully prevent the box popping up asking users to choose.

I have got the new IE8 ADM template installed in Group Policy Management and have done exactly that.

 

It's a weird one.

Has anyone got a proper fix for this issue yet? I am having the same issue since deploying IE8 and setting GP to remove the search bar for ordinary users. I have installed IE8 on the server - that would update the adm templates, wouldn't it? I too did the same Google search for the issue, and found the reg key hack, but even if it consistently worked for standalone users (which it doesn't), it is useless for a network with mandatory profiles running. Microsoft seem to be ignoring this issue for its standalone users, so is there anyone on here who has influence witn MS and can get this sorted? It is REALLY annoying!

I was just wondering what settings and which policy you set to get it to stop popping up? I've got the new IE8 ADM Templates but I haven't been able to work out how to stop it.

I haven't fixed this yet. No one seems to have a solution.

I had this problem ... In the end I cured it by creating a new mandatory profile.

 

Don't know what caused it in the first place however.

Yup, same here. Cured with a new mandatory profile for both XP and 7. Didn't use the sysprep method to create the new profile so not too tricky.

Just a update, we found that some of our users permissions to their app data folder wasn't quite right, fixing this stopped the search provider error corruption box from appearing again. Woop!
