The site seems to be having increasing troubles with people complaining about the salaries, conditions etc... on job postings, to the stage where job posts now seem to be locked after posting.

 

So, I've been having a think about this and how about introducing a 'Jobs' database? ie. pre-set fields which get filled in, and then the jobs would be kept separate to the forum. That way, people can search such a site (much like a normal job site on the net, but this would be scaled down to fit the trickle of jobs we get here). It would also mean that a poster could put an 'end date' on the post, and the job would automatically be hidden or something similar after that date.

I was having the exact same brain wave the other day!

 

I'm currently looking for a job after leaving college, and i want to work in a role in a school supporting ICT.

 

The drawback to the internet is you have to search every single job site available is to narrow it down and even then you dont necaserrily get job postings to match what your looking for.

 

With a specialist site for just educational technical jobs only would make a great tool for new comers and also current techies who are always on a look out for a new job.

 

It would be also good to include filters so you can select the county, location, sector (primary, secondary.. ect)

 

I believe this would be a great addition to the site, its users and overall the general public.

Great idea guys. The jobs do get lost pretty easily and I'm sure you could gain financial interest from various recruiting agencies, and if not financial would certainly increase memberships!

I also like the idea of standardised fields, because free-form adverts make it difficult to compare prospective jobs, and arbitrary attachments ("in word format", eugh) annoy me as much as agencies with jobs that don't exist do. So here's powdarrmonkey's non-exhaustive, idealistic and probably unimplementable wish list*:

 

• jobs to be approved by a moderator before appearing in listings - to avoid dodgy agencies, spam and duplicate listings;
  
• eBay-like fixed fields for key information, for easy comparison;
  
• standardised attachments if required - application form, person specification, etc - rather than free-form;
  
• content must be in an open, accessible standard format (properly open, not just common);
  
• clear contact details and a web contact form.
  

 

* of course, these are idealisms and this may not even be implemented at all, given how busy the forum staff are already. But they'd be nice.

Or do like StackOverflow (sorry, do keep on linking to them, but they have a lot of good ideas) and have a CV filing / recruitment service:

 

Stack Overflow Careers

 

Users can file a CV, which can be made searchable by employers or not. Employers can then come along and pay to search through CVs, hopefully finding someone who fits their criteria. If nothing else it'd be nice to have an area to store your CV where you could point people.

Not many schools would be willing to do that - they prefer people to contact them instead in my experience - as there are more IT people than jobs...

Yes, but lots of those aren't going to be hired by most schools. You get lots of people who will apply for any job going, or for jobs they aren't qualified to do. The idea of StackOverflow's CV service is that employers can see the potential employees asking and answering questions and see how they think, rather than just posting a job advert and wading through the 100 replies from everyone who saw the keyword "computers" on the posting.

I set up the new thread as the other thread was simply questioning what had happened when I set it up. So, this was a more suitable place to make suggestions as to a solution to the whole issue.

Just to through my own 2c in. I think there is room for both solutions. I think the Jobs forum is a great place for to post ad-hoc details of jobs we've noticed available in our areas and discuss them.

 

Where as a jobs database is more about future growth of the site and attracting advertisers/members. I would see it more as an official place for those officially offering employement to post.

 

So my schools Business Manager may decide to post a vacancy in the database, but I might post the same vacancy in the forum to discuss with my peers and potential applicants.

I also propose to call the Jobs forum 'Employment' and have it cover subjects like unions, facilities, careers and so on as well as job opportunities. Like FFS, re-branding it might help to remove some of the negative feelings.
