SimpleSi Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Well I was at the conference thingy recently and we had these USB thingies to give away and I said - oh not them again - they look nice but what do they do. And people said - plug it in and find out. So I did -and I pressed the button - and it launched Edugeek on my computer (I thought it would just light up pretty!) And then I thought - what I want is the same thing but to bring up my simple web-based helpdesk when my teachers have a problem and then they can just type it in the fault straight away! And then, someone said the people that made them were 2 stands away Worth the train fare alone Once they get in touch with me I'll let you know how much they are in small quants regards Simon

Given the number of USB items plugged into a teachers PC these days and given that you only have 3.3 milliamps of power available will the laucnh button fire. Also if you can get them to hit a button can they not hit a shortcut? What happens when the novelty wears off will they still use it? 1

As a fellow helpdesk software developer () I thought you'd be the 1st one on board! Look - they didn't fill in the book so I wrote my web helpdesk (obviously a very simple one). Then, they didn't click on the icon - so I made it email me and turned up 30 mins later to show it worked. So they started using it again and then got used to it and stopped again. I need another gimmick to let me help them! I'm planning on sticking it to the front of their monitors and then if a I come in and they say oh - I forgot to tell you the printer jammed 10 mins after you left last week - at that point I'll give up! regards Simon

SYNACK Posted January 16, 2010 Posted January 16, 2010 They are good but dont work on the mac so i have never used mine It should with a little work, apparently OS X maps simmilar key types together so if you use a windows keyboard (like the EG button shows up as) it will map it to the command key Command key - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia so to make it work you need to make a new keyboard shortcut for command + R which opens up the equivilent of a run box in OSX. This way when you hit the key it will work in the same way on your mac that it does on a windows pc. There is also this application kodachi 6 • 14: fKeys that lets you remap keys on a external keyboard so you could remap windows + R to whatever the equilivlent mac combination is and so not need to setup the shortcut. This same set of ideas applies to all non-windows OSs, adding a keyboard shortcut should make it work for most of them.

I have one that was generously sent to me from after the last conference and it works in that way so I am reasonably certain that they all should.
