We have a WiFi hotspot in the Sixth Form, where students can connect personal laptops and gain Internet access. A number of them have asked me if they can connect using their iPhones, which is fine in itself, although they will need to specify proxy settings before they can get anywhere.

Not being an iPerson myself, I can't easily put some instructions together myself - does anyone have/know of some simple "how to" notes for doing this? Also, with the PCs, I recommend some proxy switching software to enable easy use both at home and school - does anything similar exist for the iPhone?

Its pretty easy. You have to connect to the wireless, then go back to the wireless configuration screen, and choose the wireless connection you are connected to, then you can enter the proxy settings (only manual proxy settings IIRC).

I've done this with my boss' phone here and it works fine.

Settings > Wifi > Tap your Wifi Connection > Scroll down > Select Manual and Enter Proxy Settings

Proxy is done on a per connection setting, so wont need to be removed for their existing home settings.
