PDF Printer

Here's a general question there are so many PDF creators out there that uses a viruatl printer so which is the best out there to create the same quality and well the smallest file produced too. and free as well

I've used CutePDF and PDF995 before. Both fairly good.

Just wanted to point out something that I've learned the hard way about these things.

 

All of the free PDF printer apps that I have tried share a particular characteristic which is that they don't convert hyperlinks in the original document to PDF hyperlinks. If the document has a hyperlink that says 'http://www.google.co.uk', some (or possible all), PDF readers will translate this into a hyperlink, but this will fail if the hyperlink is of the form 'Click here to go to Google' with the URL hidden. In this instance you will see what looks like a hyperlink in the reader but it won't do anything.

Does open office allow you to convert into pdf - not sure how well it works with links whether its a

 

'click here' type link or an actual link ie http://www.domain.com

 

I normally use cute PDF and just use the normal type links ie http://www.domain.com

 

and cute pdf seems to convert those correctly.

I use the free open source software PDF Creator

Works quite well, and its free.

 

I use PDFTools to join and split PDFs.

Again, works well and free.

We have used CUPS-PDF in the past, which provides a network PDFprinter, avoiding the need to install local printer as with Cute PDF.

I've ended up using Bullzip recently as it can embed fonts... most of the free ones I found previously couldn't do it.

PrimoPDF is free and quite good, but you can't really beat the full Adobe Acrobat product in my opinion.

Another vote here for PDF Creator- no problems in a couple of years of use and open source so the price works.
