Guest theeldergeek Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 We appear to have had a partial thaw overnight. I can see patches of tarmac outside and there is no snow/frost on the cars. No snow in the forecast for us either. Likewise! I was surprised this morning to see my car with considerably less snow on it than late last night, and whilst we don't have any tarmac to speak of, there has definitely been a thaw of sorts. Yipee! Roads still look decidedly dodgy though, boooo! Temperatures for the South East might even hit a 'balmy' 7 degrees later on next week. Piña colada, shorts and sunglasses at the ready!

We've dug the drive out (again) this morning and cleared the cars in the hope we may be able to go somewhere tomorrow. I was amused by BBC Breakfast news on Bluebell Hill (between Chatham and Maidstone) this morning. 1. A cyclist rode past the reposrter just as she was saying how dreadful the roads were. 2. Bluebell Hill is a good place if you want to see the worst weather in Kent 3. If they were filming at the top of it, it was clearly open and therefore conditions can't be too bad!

'Down' here in East Sussex, the roofs of houses are considerably less snow covered now than they were first thing this morning, and the snow on the ground is far more slushy than it has been these last few days. It is trying to snow, but barely succeeding. I am even going to clear our drive and footpath in a short while to speed up the disappearance of the dwindling snow! It also feels decidedly 'warmer' here, albeit still near freezing! Here's to the 'thaw' continuing!

However, thanks to the efforts of everyone across the country, Scotland is coping well. Putting us to shame in the south.

localzuk Posted January 11, 2010 Posted January 11, 2010 Well, our forecast was wrong, as it consistently has been for 2 weeks. The Met Office predict the apocalypse and then change the forecast about 1 hour at a time - to the same thing 'cloudy'.

Site has sort of been cleared, that is, paths have been made through the snow but it's still icy underfoot in parts - someone is bound to go A over T at some point. Site staff have done a good job getting it to how it is nonetheless, 'big up' to them as they have shifted a lot of snow over the last 24 hours! Roads were bloody awful getting in. Usual grumpy individuals to contend with, nothing changes. Keep smiling. Edited January 11, 2010 by theeldergeek

browolf Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 back to work yesterday. the site staff have done an amazing job of gritting and clearing all the ice from around the school. The less immediate areas where kids would normally play have been roped off. They'd hired these mini JCBs to scoop it all up! We had a beginning thaw yesterday with some rain. However overnight, it's all gone and frozen solid again. Really treacherous most of the way to work. Wore my chained boots and it was alright but still took 50% longer time than usual.

witch Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 It's like we live in a different world...looking at the map on the TV last night, the snow actually skipped us - curving up gracefully from left to right. We managed about a centimetre of slushy snow last night. When people remember the winter of 2009-2010 as particularly hard, all us East Dorset folks will be going 'huh?'
Guest theeldergeek Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 were closed here in Birmingham too yay Closed down here in East Sussex, a lot more snow than I think was forecast. I had a good 2 - 3 inches of fresh snow on my car this morning. Started off to work as was told the school was open, 15 minutes into my usual 30 minute journey, and I had only just made it off my estate! The phone rang, t'was the boss telling me they had decided that in actual fact the school was going to be closed. Turned round to take a further 25 minutes to get home as by this time the roads were beginning to get littered with cars that were just wheel spinning or not moving. Not much fun at all.
