Starting a service... (Messenger)

I need to start the messenger service on all machines, but it's currently set at disabled. Is there any way to do this with GP? From a script? or have I got to visit each machine?

Batch file it, sc.exe is located in the Windows Resource Kit.

could you not shove it in the sys vol folder or somewhere all pc's can access it then in the path to launch it you would just use the full path to the sc.exe

You might find sc.exe installed on the machines. Try it on one. Just open cmd.exe and type sc.exe you should see output.

 

Certain SP's had sc.exe attached to them.

sc.exe \\machine-01 config "Messenger" start= Automatic

sc.exe \\machine-02 config "Messenger" start= Automatic

sc.exe \\machine-03 config "Messenger" start= Automatic

Never tried it remotely, however it is supposed to work remotely. I just batch the command as I typed into a login script, and executed a mass administrator login to apply, followed by a reboot and removed it.

I created a vbscript that started the service then added it to a computer startup GPO. With enough time all of the machines will start and load it up. This is what I put in my code.

 

net start messenger

1. if you use net start messenger does that enable the service as well

 

2. if you only used net start messenger then it is more likely it was a bat unless you used wscript or something similiar to exec or run it or using the methods to launch and use command prompt commands

 

just thoughts as I could be corrected

Yes sorry its a .bat file

 

It would appear that the service starts automatically each time the computer starts. I have it as a gpo so it is told to start each time the computer boots.

 

Try it on a test pc.

 

I started this service because a client was moved from a room and no one told me. I used net send to send a message to that computer asking the next person who logged on to email the location of the computer.

It's not ideal. It's more of a stop gap until I can get another school to provide some feedback. Just need to find a school with the same setup, will only be a few days until I do that.

Stick it in the logon script or compile an .exe to start at logon or shove it in the Run registry.

Pcounter. It should use Wbalance.exe to send messages, but it's not.

I too have thought about enabling the Messenger Service for better feedback, as it just won't let the kids know they don't have enough credit if they try to print.

It looks like you need the PopUp application they have and create a screen that is roughly the same as their last screenshot.

You could in theory do both - a script and GPO method. Generally speaking using a GPO would be my approach.

This is interesting. I had a long chat, and dial in session, with support on Friday about this as they told me that WBalance.exe does all the messaging when the user has run out of credits. This is the reason why I contacted them initially.

 

PPopup.exe will display print confirmation dialogue, and department code window etc but it does not inform the user that they do not have enough credits. I'm told it's WBalance.exe that does this.

We use CSE.NET here; it's part of the Suite of programs that are supplied, but overall its just a bog standard network just running their Middleware app.

 

WBalance gets loaded at logon, we automatically credit each Student account with 10p each day which is enough for 5 x A4 Mono and 2 x A4 Colour prints per day. If they want anymore they have to come and see us to ask and explain why. Problem is, the WBalance window is the first thing the kids close when they login, so any messenging that provides (and I've only seen it do the balance anyway) gets lost.

 

I'm going to look at this Popup app a bit more now, I'm intrigued.
