chrbb Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Apologies if in wrong forum! Anyone use/recommend walkie talkies? Apparently latest plan is for Mid-day supervisors to communicate with each other using wlakie talkies:) (no idea why they can't shout - they seem quite good at that). So any advice gratefully received.

Haptic Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Do you get a discount for product ugliness? very fair point lol the below look ok when seated in the charger http://img.misco.co.uk/images/uploadedimages/large/20091002172604.jpg
TechMonkey Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We have them for various members of staff. Have consistently found the small PCR types to be rubbish but we are in an old building so very solid walls may be to blame. Prefer the chunkier old school types especially as they have much better batteries. Obviously more expensive though, not sure by how much. Next problem is people using them, not pressing the tune button, holding the button down long enough, not speaking to soon, remembering to have it on/up/listen to it, etc etc etc All good fun though
webman Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Ahhh, that's alright then To me they look like a hi-tech bike lock - what on earth were Motorola thinking?!
mb2k01 Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I would heavily recommend testing any handheld radio system in your school before going ahead with purchase. The radios which don't require an additional license are PMR466 radios. They often state decent reception / coverage but this is all dependent on materials in your local enviroment. A decent radio supplier should be willing to loan you a couple of PMR466 handsets to do some site testing. If you find that the PMR466 radios don't work as well as they should (not receive anything, or receive broken static audo) then you might have to consider a business license and a central repeater. The repeater is basically a box connected to an aerial that repeats the signal - they are quite pricey, but sometimes the only way forward. If you do go down the cheap PMR route I'd recommend staying away from the ultra-cheap Motorola units - I've used a lot of the low-end range and their battery life + reliability have been poor.
localzuk Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We use these: Motorola XTN446 | Motorola 446 | Motorola XTN Radio
Haptic Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We also have the below in stock which also dont require any additional licience, http://img.misco.co.uk/images/uploadedimages/large/20090901101217.jpg Features Up to 10 km range Over 300 channel combinations Voice activation (VOX) Auto power save Low battery indicator Headset outlet Belt clip Keylock Roger beep
Edu-IT Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 Roger beep That's sold it for me. Do they also make that 'shhhhh' noise?
Sylv3r Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We have about 4 sets for our Lunchtime supervisory assistants - mainly for the ones up the field to get in contact with the Main reception. Majority of the staff who regularly need to be contacted have been provided with a mobile phone. Caretakers, Senior Management, me etc.

OllieC Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We used to use motorola XTN 446 radios but now in new buildings we've had to invest in a repeater/licensed channel and vertex standard radios... all a bit pricey. The motorolas were very good though when we used them.
jedmondson Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 I use a few of the cheep motorolas ones on scout activities they get ok coverage.
BTCC_Fan Posted October 20, 2009 Posted October 20, 2009 We had cheap Oregon Scientific ones for dinner time and breaks for the staff on duty. They were used less than a year till they ended up in carrier bags in the camera room. Conversly we have some Motorola ones for the site staff which are used daily.
